Making reservations

I just know I'll need to get out of this cold by the end of Feb, so tomorrow I'm gonna make train reservations to go to New Orleans. With the crazy weather everywhere, I don't want to try to fly to FL or CA and get stuck in an airport for days. The train from here is overnight and almost always makes it through. Even if it's only in the 50s there, it will still be freezing in IL. It will seem like Spring to us. I'd like to time it to see the azaleas and crepe myrtle in bloom, but not sure when it is. We will avoid the Mardi Gras scene. I've picked out a hotel with a pool on the roof, if it's not heated, at least I'll have a place to sit and get some sun. It's terribly gray here today.

Jacquie,
A trip south
Have a great time Jacquie! 50 sounds awfully good right now. New Orleans can use some tourist dollars too.So you're doing a good deed too. I never thought of taking a train down there. Is it difficult to sleep on the way?
Bon Voyage!
I'll find out about the sleeping on a later trip with a friend to the Grand Canyon in Sept. She wants to share a room, but I think that would be a bit too much togetherness. Turned out the NO train was full when I wanted to go - and it wasn't even Mardi Gras week. Trip is overnight both ways, with meals included. The problem was we wanted a sleeper roomette where you share public baths and showers. The complete bedrooms are too expensive and we wouldn't use the shower on an overnight trip anyway. I was a little concerned about the size of the roomette and the fact that I'd be the one who had to climb down from the top bunk in the middle of the night when nature called. It's smaller than our guest bath - LOL.
I did get the hotel we want, now we have to decide whether to fly or drive. The last time we drove a long way I got a bout of sciatica that lasted for 6 months. Didn't make any difference whether I drove or was the passenger.
