Menstrual Cramps :( What works?

Hi everyone,

Today was a terrible, terrible day. Despite having taken a Midol and an Advil, and having a hot pack on my tummy, nothing worked. It ached and ached till I cried. The most terrible 6 hours I have ever had. I was so helpless. I couldn't read, I couldnt talk to anyone, I couldnt watch tv, I just had to curl up and sob for what felt like hours. Plus, it was accompanied by chills, body ache, nausea, and diarrhoea. This is not normal for me. I have had trouble before everytime, but it's not this bad.

What works for all of you?
Is there a better OTC medicine out there that works and is stronger?
The ones I took took a long time to kick in, I think. And that interim time period was like hell. I couldn't even walk straight. Later, I had some hot tea too. Now I feel better. And I dont know if it is the tea that worked, or the medicine, or was it just supposed to get better anyway.

Thanks a lot. I will look forward to your inputs.

Thanks for your reply Kristin.
I had taken only one capsule of Advil and was afraid to take more. Perhaps I should take more next time this happens. Can one take this even when there are no symptoms? To prevent the symptoms?

Yes, actually it's recommended to start taking it before your period starts.

I feel for you- I really do :( I suffered the worst cramps of my life last week and was beside myself due to the pain. I didn't know what to do. I'm going to worry until my next AF next month but in the meantime, I have bought the best painkiller available without prescription in the UK (Paramol) and magnesium tablets, along with Oil Of Evening Primrose with Starflower Oil capsules. I'm going to see how that goes. Good luck with yours too. If you hear of any remedies that work PLEASE let me know and I will do the same for you. I've never cried with cramps before either - last week was the first time and mine, like yours, lasted for around 6 hours and I too couldn't speak to anyone or do anything :(
