Does anyone take cramps seriously?

I'm new to ivillage. I came here looking for advice for an incident that just happened to me. Let me start out by saying I'm 42 years old and healthy. No regular meds, other than the ibuprofin I take monthly for cramps.

Last week during my period, I woke up at 3:00 am with SEVERE menstural cramps. I have had periods for 25 years and have always had cramps which motrin, heat and bed rest have been enough to alleviate, but I had never been in this much pain in my life!! I did what I normally do, took 800 mg. of Ibuprofin, put on a thermacare pad and crawled back in bed. The pain was so severe, I couldn't even lay in bed. At 4:00 am I got up and sat outside because I was burning up. I decided that since I couldn't sleep, I would take my shower and go on into work, assuming the cramps would subside. In the shower, I almost passed out. Needless to say I was very frightened.

Finally at 4:30 I woke my mother and she took me to the emergency room. I really felt silly for going to the hospital for cramps, but she thought I might be having an appendicitis attack. When I got to the hospital, my temperature registered at 94 degrees. While waiting in the emergency room, I vomited. Later the ibuprofin must have kicked in and I started feeling better. They took a blood sample, x-rays and a urine sample (catheter). Finding blood in my urine, they also did a CAT scan. Everything came up fine and they sent me home with a sheet on how to deal with menstrual pain. This after a male doctor tried to explain to me that cramps were a part of mensturation and sometimes were worse than other times (great advice from someone who has never experienced it). I happened to have a dr. appt. that afternoon (internist) and he had no more additional advice.

After doing search on the web with no info than the standard 'motrin, hot bath, caffiene, etc., I came to ivillage, thinking a woman's site would have more info. But here I am on a 'other women's health issues' board because I couldn't find a board dealing with menstruation or cramps!!!

Is it strange that no pelvic exam was done or that no one gave me advice to have this checked out further? I am dreading next month, afraid this will happen again. Any thoughts?

At the beginning of the page, on the left-hand side, there is a box for you to "find messages about..." and a search feature at the top of the page .
