Birthday party with mixed age kids

My DD will be 3 soon. We are having a family party from both sides. There will be 5 kids- age ranges vary (oldest child 9, youngest 3) and will be boys and girls. I don't want to make the activities boring for the older ones, but yet I want it to be fun for DD. I would like a pinata, but have had bad luck with the ones from birthday express (last year for my other DD, we couldn't break it open until my son hit it hard with a baseball bat). I thought about a pull string one, but I'm sure the other kids will think it's too easy. Maybe the pinata for the younger ones, any ideas on what the older 3 could do? (ages 6, 8, and 9). Thanks! Ann

Not a whole lot of ideas here..but my cousin had mixed ages at her DD party (3) (my DD being the oldest at 6)and she had cupcakes made and the kids could decorate their own cupcakes. Everyone liked that, also we played a small game of pin the tail on the donkey (everyone gets blindfolded so it's equally hard). Maybe the oldest would like to have some kind of treasure hunt instead of the pinata? Sorry I'm not much help. Good luck Shelley

Hi there,, Wal-mart has pinata's too, and so does Toysrus,, try them,, all ages like pinatia's. Secertly tell the older ones that they can be your helpers,, they love it,, have them greet the guests and take the presents to the table, they will think they are special,, have a table set up just for coloring I always have one set up and one or two of the older one's usually ends up over there coloring quietly.

I think 7 and 8 yr old would still enjoy pin the tale on the donkey or pin the nose on the clown,, the dollar stores usually have a bunch of those games and favors too.

GL,, to you let us know how it goes,,

We have a big immidate family. 50 of us. The ages for kids all range from 1 week on up. So our cut off for favors and such is 10. And in our family we just do a Pinata. The youngest kids go first and that way everyone get a turn. I usally pick a big kid adult ( everyone has one of those. A adult who never forgot how to be a kid that all the actual kids gravitate too) To break it open. That way all the kids get a chance at the goody scramble.

Since there are so many of us I don't do games. But I have on occasion given the kids a treasure hunt. To do or have a room just for them to play game boys, PS2 and cards. I put a punch bowl or a cooler of sodas in the room lots of napkins and chips dips and so on then just let them alone. They seem to like that. And the teenagers seem to be ok with this too.

Sometimes no plan is the best plan.

Good luck have fun
