Pain at Epidural Site?

I've been having unbelievable back pain the past couple of weeks. I attributed it to all the lifting and contorting one does when you have a newborn, but today I realized it's very localized in the area when the epidural went in.

Anyone had/heard of this? There's not much on the web about it, and I'm sure if I contact the anesthesiologist he's going to tell me that it's unrelated.

Thanks!

I would call. I don't know that I agree the anesthesiologist will just tell you it's unrelated. I had an epi when ds was born (although it didn't work for me -- none of the 3 did -- but that's another story). Anyway, I was back in the hospital the day after we came home with an exruciating headache. Even though I had severe edema and my bp was 172/116, the anesthesiologist came down to make sure my headache wasn't from the epi. Some may blow you off, but I don't think you can assume that's what will happen.

hi, I can relate, when I had my daughter 4 years ago I had an epi, i started to get back spasims and severe pain where they put it in at. so I swore I wouldn't get another one. I was wrong I did get another one and I have severe pain AGAIN and spasims, it hurts when I stand more than 5 min and sit for a little bit. I know it's from the epi because I never had this prob. befor. I just wish it would go away..

I did not have an epidural with any of my children, but I did have one when I got my tubes tied after my last baby. I had severe back pain and my husband noticed several large bruises on my back as well. My pain was only temporary so hopefully yours will be also.

I had not problems with my epidural exept my bp dropped after and I vomited. I didn't even feel it going in and then slept till the nurse said it was time to push.

However, I have heard of moms saying they have pain where there epi was afterwards. I would call your anesthesiologist then if he doesn't do anything or it doesn't work I would go see a chiropractor.

Thank you all for your feedback. I have an OB f/u appt on Monday, so I'll get the anesthesia MD's name and give him a call. I knew the whole c-section and recovery seemed too easy! I never used the pain meds for my c-section, but now almost two months later I'm having to use them for my back.

I know, whine whine whine......

Your pain most probably could be from the epi...I did not have one but a few years back I had a spinal tap and had localized pain at the site and back spasms/aches for quite a few months. From my expereince, it was not permanent. I would call your dr. just to document it.

I had two spinals wich are kinda similar the second time I flinched a little and ended up with a huge ugly bruise and a knot where the needle went in it was very sore for a good while. The pain was not extreme just bothersome. My cousin had the epidural and she also had back pain for a while. If it is really hurting or goes on for longer than you expect it wouldnt hurt to get it checked. good luck.

I have had minor pain at my epidural site since I had one 4 years ago. I had one with my dd but not my ds. The doc I had said it could take up to two years to go away. It has been four and it still hurts. Luckily its minor and only hurts when I do certain things. I have moved since I had my ds two years ago so I haven't talked to a doctor about it since. Talk to your doctor and good luck!

Hi! I can totally relate to your problem. I have had 2 kids, one with epidural and one with a spinal. Both times, about a week later I hd excruciating pain in the site. SO bad I couldn't lay flat, thought I was going crazy it hurt so bad. I could hardly move to get up and hold the baby. I'm not sure why this happens, but it does have to do with the procedure. Mine went away after a few days. I took pain meds and used a heating pad on my back (very helpful). Goodluck and hang in there!!!!!
