HI, MY DAUGHTER JUST TURNED ONE AND I AM GOING TO BE SWITCHING HER FROM FORMULA TO WHOLE MILK. THE DOCTOR TOLD ME THAT SHE NEEDS TO START DRINKING OUT OF A SIPPY CUP BUT SHE WANTS NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. I WOULD REALLY APPRECIATE ANY SUGGESTIONS ON HOW TO GET HER TO TAKE THE CUP. THANKS.

Avent makes a really good sippy cup with a spout and handles. My dd has taken to it with no problem. You might give it a try...

Hi Tanya,

Nice name!! I had the same problem with my ds. First of all, will your dd take the whole milk from the bottle? My son would not at first so I mixed milk and formula (about half of each) and slowly weaned out the formula until he was on plain milk.

After that I started putting it in the sippy cup and IT was a no go. I did find that he would take some water only from the sippy cup, but usually he just shook his head no at it. I even tried holding him and the sippycup for him. I would give him the cup numerous times a day for a few days and then lay off it for a few days. Finally, one day when we had been out we walk in the door and the cup with water was on the table and I handed it to him and he just drank. I think he just needed to want to and be ready to do it on his own.

He's now 14 months and I still cant get him to drink milk out of the sippy cup unless it has oveltine in it. I hate that he is still on the bottle, but I give him one first thing in the morning and one at bedtime then he gets the cup the rest of the day.

Hi!

My dd was slow to start as well, but here's my advice.

I'd get a sippy with handles first off. Let her play with it, hold it to her lips (filled with water). She'll get it eventually.

DD still won't take milk from the sippy, but she is completely weaned from the bottle. She eats plenty of calcium-rich products throughout the day (cheese, yogurt, broccoli, etc) She gets all she needs. Sure, it's a hassle because I have to feed her more often, but at least she is off the bottle. It was important for me to get her off the bottle by 1 because I heard that the longer you go the child turns 1, the harder it is to take away.

I still offer the milk in the sippy and sometimes she'll sip at it, but she will really drink the water.

I'd say, as long as she has a good diet filled with lots of fruit and veggies, she will stay hydrated. That's advice that I got from others right here on this board, because I was worried at first too.

Good luck!
