ROTAVIRUS-its going around

Hey moms I just wanted to let you all know about a virus I just found out about cause my DD got it last week...rotavirus. Rotavirus is a viral infection of the intestines and is the leading cause of severe dehydration in the first 2 years of life. Right now is the season for it,but it can happen any time of the year. The symptoms are fever, diarrea(foul smelling) and vomiting. Children who really got it bad have symptoms of dehydration such as dry mouth, decreased urination and lethargy (drowsiness). It can be very serious, especially in infants and toddlers. Often 20 episodes of vomiting and diarrhea each is not uncommon. you can get rotavirus just about anywhere. From your child touching a shopping cart, toy in a waiting area,etc...This virus is thought to be spread by fecal-oral contact. Ewwwwwwwww. It can survive for several days on nonporous materials in conditions of low temps. and humidity. Hands that have been contaminated directly or from surfaces may be the most important means by which rotavirus is transmitted. So wash your babies hands with soap. Make sure you wash your hands and definatly after changing your baby's diaper. So just be careful. My DD got it and was hospitalized for it. She couldn't eat and she was hooked up to i.v.'s. And it's very contagiuos. I honestly think she got it when she was at the Dr.'s office last week of all places. She put her mouth on the armrest of a chair and i stopped her but i didn't think anything of it really until the following day she could not stop puking and her fever got to 103.5. So just wanted to let you know.
