need Christmasluminary ideas

Our neighborhood has a luminary display every year a couple of weeks before Christmas. Most of the people use milk jugs with sand and votive candles or Christmas lights strung through them. I don't like the look they present during the day-it looks like the recycling man needs to pay us a visit! Any ideas that aren't too expensive, but look great? TIA Ann

What about luminaria bags? I don't know how well they'd withstand the weather where you live ... maybe you already thought of this and dismissed it. The bags are pretty inexpensive. If it is an acceptable thought, there is a gorgeous, overachiever version listed at the bottom with links to d-i-y instructions and supplies. I don't think it would be anymore time consuming or expensive than carving a couple pumpkins -- less trouble than that, actually.

This is a really pretty do-it-yourself luminaria bag, if that sort of project doesn't make you nuts. The round doilies look kind of snowflake-like:

(edited to add that I just re-read the instructions and if you don't mind paying for it ... a can of Spray Mount (spray adhesive) from a craft or hardware store might work better for sticking the doilies to the inside of the bag. You'd have to work pretty hard with that glue stick and I'm never happy with the way that kind of adhesive bonds (or doesn't bond). With Spray Mount ... just a wave or two of the can and bingo ... it's repositionable for a minute or so and then it's firmly bonded. It's perfect for this kind of paper-to-paper application ... The only caution being to protect all surfaces as you would if you were spray painting and do it in a well-ventilated area. My agency purchased a special station just for this purpose. It had a reverse-fan that sucked up all the excess particles and it protected nearby surfaces.)

A pkg of 4"round white doilies for this project, 100 for $2.79 ... since the gold ones show through better, you could just spray paint 'em (I didn't see too many gold ones on the web and the ones that I saw were expensive & in BULK Qty)
