baby time on tummy

Dh just called and said he had just heard from his Aunt who is a nurse practitioner that babies do still need to sleep on their back but any other time that they are awake they need to be on their tummy or they will start regressing and their are important things to their development that they don't learn if they do not spend all this time on their stomached. So Elyse (4 months old) is trying to get use to this today. (she hates being on her tummy) but I am so afraid that if she is spending all this time on her tummy she can't be under her gym and learning to reach for things and if she is under her gym or on her tummy she is not spending time with me and therefor not learning to interact with people. She is not awake enough during the day to do all of this and I am afraid she is going to be behind in something. How do you find the balance?

With my son I "rotated" every 10-15 minutes. He would get 10-15 min of gym time, 10-15 min of tummy time (he too hated it) and 10-15 (or more) of cuddly time with mommy (or daddy if I let him go). I think well rounded is better than all or nothing. Do what feels right to you.

Great idea Tracy! I will definitely give that a try. I agree that well rounded sounds better!

I think that each day a baby should get at least 1-2 hours of tummy time or more.
I could be wrong and I think if you are unsure, you should ask your ped and find out.

I really wouldn't worry about it too much...as long as she is getting some time on her tummy I'm sure she'll be fine. Babies don't like it at first, but as they get older and more used to it they do. Put some interesting toys in front of her or lay on your tummy facing her. Try not to worry so much...just give her lots of variety and enjoy your time with her...before you know it you'll be worried about who she's dating : )
