Funny but horrible

Well this might be a little long but bare with me. Today my dd's 3 yr old gerbil died, her name was Ashes. They noticed when they got home from school that she was not moving as much as she does, so they took her out of her cage and she started breathing very slow. We tried giving her drops of water but, needless to say she died in Mercedes' hands. We were all crying. The girls started blaming themselves for not feeding her everyday, but I reassured them that she lived a very long time for a gerbil. I think their life span is around 2 yrs. Well, my middle daughter Lexus was just crying and crying. She decided to call grandma (my mother) and tell her the bad news. Mother wasnt home so she left a message. She said (very emotional) "grandma, grandma are you there, Ashes died, Ashes died". Well, this is where it gets a little funny but horrible. I was taking a shower and my dh went in and said "babe, everyone is calling over here thinking that Aston died (my son who is almost 6 months)", I said "WHAT!!!". I got out of the shower and right when I did the phone rang again, it was my cousin. She was crying and going hysterical. She was asking what happened and if it was true. I said "NO, ASTON DIDN'T DIE, IT WAS ASHES THE GIRLS GERBIL". She was still crying and then that made me cry too. My mother (when she got home) heard her message and thought my dd said Aston, Lexus was crying alot on the message, so I can see how she got confused. My mother had tried calling our house first before calling everyone, but she said our line was busy. My mother was going hysterical running around the house and trying to get a hold of somebody to pick her up. Well when I finally got to talk to my cousin a little better (without us crying) she said they were at Jim's Restaurant and had just ordered, when she got back from the restroom with her dd's, her mother (my aunt) told her "meja, Aston just died, I dont know what happened yet, but Tia Ina (my mother) is going crazy". My cousin started to yell inside the Jim's, they had just brought their salads when she told the waitress, "I am sorry but we have to leave there was a sudden death in the family". By the time they left, the whole restaurant thought my son had passed away. Isn't that awful, all because of a gerbil. Now the gerbils death doesn't seem that bad anymore. After everything had calmed down, my cousin said they were going to another Jim's cause they were embarassed to go back to that one. So along with being sick today, I have been on an emotional roller coaster. My mother stopped by to see Aston and was just holding him and kissing him.

Olivia,

that is terrible!!!! But yet, strangley funny. Something that you would see in some comedy movie, where someone says something, and its screwed up, and so on.

I'm sorry for your girls loss. I had one of those things myself, but mine was the hampster that wouldnt die lol. Its hard on youngsters losing a pet. I hope they are ok in dealing with it.

As far as the rest, it's too funny!!! I can just visualize the family at a restaurant, and yelling at the waiter that they are leaving when the salads arrive lol. I know it's NOT funny, but hey!

I know Lesley. I tell ya I was crying then laughing then crying. But now it is just too funny. I have been hugging my little man like crazy. And not to mention my mother, she is so paranoid now. She does not want my girls to carry him cause they might drop him and she doesn't want him to sleep alone in his crib upstairs anymore...lol.

Your right, it was funny but horrible.
How sad that a little gerbil caused so much trouble.
I do have one question, why would ytour dd call to say her brother died if it really had happened? That would be a clue to call and make sure first.
I am so sorry that this happened with the gerbil and then with them thinking your son died.
((((((((((hugs)))))))))))

Mel, That is what exactly my aunt told my mother. If something would have really happened to Aston it would have been me or dh calling her. Andrea, I spell it Lexie, but it really doesn't matter.

Traci, How funny!! It is already happening. They are spoiling him. My mother just called me and said she bought him lots of stuff at Wal-Mart this morning. And last night when she came to see him, she wanted to take him home with her. I didn't let her though, I sure could have used the rest, but I would have missed him. She is getting carried away with protecting him though, she asked if she could buy me another crib to keep downstairs in our room....lol.
