A little disappointed

Our kids are starting school tomorrow. It's a big deal, especially because Justin's starting kindergarten. We've had a tradition since Matthew started preschool (he's now entering 3rd grade) of going out for ice cream the night before school starts. This tradition started in my DH's family, where they all used to go to Dairy Queen. I liked the idea, because I love ice cream ;) and decided to carry it on. We've done it for years. A way to end the Summer and gear up for Fall and the busy school year.

The kids have been talking about it all weekend. Going for ice cream for them is like Heaven. And I barely ate all day so I could treat myself to a huge sundae, LOL! We planned to go after dinner.

Well, my DH just announced to me that I should take them without him, that he's "really not in the mood to celebrate," and he would just be a downer anyway. He's taking the morning off tomorrow to see Justin onto the schoolbus, and go to breakfast with me, so he says that's good enough!!

I'm so disappointed! We always do this as a family. Half the time when I'm eating ice cream, I'm in "no mood" either because it's PMS-triggered, so what's the big deal? I'm also surprised, because Michael is usually so happy and upbeat. Today he is not. It's because he lost a patient last night (I posted about it under DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES), but I think he could suck it up, even if he didn't eat any ice cream, and go with us for the kids and to keep me company. It's also hard for me to handle 4 kids by myself while he mopes around on the couch flicking the remote.

Maybe I should be more sympathetic and not complain, considering the circumstances, but this is a little family ritual we've done for years and he's a part of it. Of course, I have to still take the kids by myself or they'd be crushed; and he told me he'd put them to bed for me when we get home, but I'm still bummed. What a buzz wreck. I think maybe he needs to pull his head out, but then--I feel insensitive saying that.

I am sorry he is not feeling in the mood to do the traditional ice cream eating.
i hope, if you do go, you enjoy it.
Maybe you can bring him back his favorite treat to him at home if he does not make it.

That's a bummer Sofia. Maybe if he had gone with you, it would change his mood. I hope you and the kiddos had a great time!!

OMGosh, Sofia, this EXACT same thing happened to me the day the twins started school!! We always go out for icecream on the first day of school (no official tradition, we just need another excuse to eat icecream) and dh couldn't go with us because he felt sick!! I was so sad and wished he could just suck it up and go with us, but tried to get over it. It just wasn't the same without him though, he can be the life of the party.

Anyway, I totally know how you feel. I hope Michael feels better soon, too. ((((HUGS)))) to you and the family.

How funny, Erin. More coincidences in our lives ;)

Thanks, everyone, for your cheery words. He wound up going with us after all, because I made him feel guilty, LOL! He didn't order any ice cream, but then he kept taking bites of mine, and then he said it made him feel better.
