Say it discriminately, that is. Ellie babbled it at the normal age, along with dada and baba and the like...but when do they use Mama appropriately to call you or get your attention and such??
Ell is 17 months and she's got Dada down pat...she screams "DADA!" when he walks in the door and she says "buh buh dada" when he leaves for work and she says "ni-ni dada" when she blows him kisses before she goes to bed. She says lots of things actually...can name all of her favorite foods and can point to dogs and cats and birds and a few other animals and name them...but....
We're having a Mama issue. She won't say it! If you ask her who mama is, she will smile and point to herself (at which point I gently correct her and say "no, I didn't ask you who was in charge...I asked you who mama was!" lol) She does call me something, but...
She has a little trouble with "M"'s I think because if you ask her what a cow says she will sometimes go "boooooo" instead of "moooo". Or maybe she associates me with baba aka bottle or something and that's why she chose the word she did?? I wrack my brain to try and come up with a reason....but...
My daughter calls me "Bob". Go ahead and laugh, heh. God knows my mother and sister have wet their pants over it. She has called me Bob for the last 9 months now. I won't let anyone encourage her, I make everyone refer to me as Mama (for awhile relatives were getting such a kick out of it that they would say to her "where's Bob??" just to see her point at me). Has anyone else had anything like this happen??? Ugh, I waited 33 years to be a Mama and SHE WON'T SAY IT!! Someone PLEASE tell me they've had the same experience or at least reassure me that eventually she'll call me mommy!!
"Bob", 35 year old SAHM
DD 17 months

LOL that's cute!
Emily didn't start saying "mama" until now, and she's two, so I went through the same thing.
roslyn's first word was "ZACK!"
Okay, I laughed.
Abbie called me Ta-ta for a long time but that was because I lived with my parents and that is what she knew me as. Lilli just started calling me mom and she's almost 2 1/2. But she calls Abbie, Nana. Don't know where it came from, but Lilli is the only one allowed to call her that, otherwise Abbie get's mad! Bree says mama, but only when she's babbling. DH can walk thru the door and then it is all dadada. She even has the dog's name down, Joe...and he comes to her!
