I've just got to share what happened tonight. We suprised our 3 kids 11, 8 and 5 by taking them to see Shrek 3 tonight. Afterward we were going to do a little shopping and then a nice dinner together. While we were shopping my DD (11), DS (8) and DD (5) were either complaining about something or just whining. I have decided recently that I am no longer going to lose my temper, yell or get myself worked up over kids who don't behave. A few weeks ago, I sat all three down and explained that I should only have to ask them to do somehting once and that if i have to ask repeatly for them to do or not do something they would be punished. Tonight as we were walking through Target I gave them all a warning that I expected them to stop whining and just behave while I did a few minutes of shopping. After 5 minutes of ignoring me , my DH and I took them home, fed them cereal and put them to bed 3 1/2 hours earlier than they would normally go to bed on a Friday night. They were mortified. Especially when my DH and I stopped somewhere on the way home and bought ourselves a nice dinner, movie and icecream. The icecream really got to them. Anyway, to make a long story short (too late), my DH and I had a wonderful date right in our living room complete with a picnic, movie and icecream and my house was totally quiet. I wonder if my sweet darlings will believe me now when I tell them that I am going to only ask them once to do something. I have to admit, I felt guilty all night, but still had a great time with DH. Has anybody else had a similar experience? I would love to hear. Thanks for reading. Have a great weekend. Lynn

Maybe that will do the trick.

Good for you for sticking to your guns! I see so many parents in stores make empty threats and the kids totally know it too, so they get away with anything and everything. I bet yours will be much better during your next outing! Good job mom!
