My dog is in heat

I have never had a female dog. We got Harley when she was 8 wks old in March. Just tonight she started bleeding all over the floor and her pen. We have her in a pen for at night and while we are away because she's not out of the chewing stage. I am not sure how long her being in heat will last. I don't think I'll do the diapers because I know she will just chew them off. Does anyone have any tips on how to deal with this situation?

I don't have any tips but to tell you that a dog can still be in heat even if she is not bleeding.

I can tell you from being around dogs my whole life and breeding and showing them that a dog is in heat for anywhere between 2 and 3 weeks. It is usually 7-10 days of bleeding and then a week or so of time that they are able to be bred. The last half of the heat cycle is the most important to watch them as this is when they are ovulating and when puppies are able to be conceived. If you think she would eat off the diapers I would try what are called doggy panties. They are fabric with a section in the inside to hold a sanitary pad like you would buy for yourself. They have velcro closures on the back of the dog with a tail hole.

Are you going to get her spayed?

Thank you all for your responses. She isn't going outside unless she's on a leash. I told DH last night that we don't need any puppies. lol We do plan on getting her spayed in the near future. I called the vet this morning and they won't do it while she's in heat. The only other question I had was how often are they in heat? I hope it's not once a month like us! lol

They are usually in heat once every six months or so but this varies from dog to dog just as it does in people. I would recommend strongly that since you are not wanting puppies setting up an appointment with the vet to have her spayed about three weeks from now just to make sure she is fully out of heat.

Thank you for your help! I do plan on calling the vet and making her an appointment. Now if I can just get over her whining constantly for the next couple weeks, I'll be good! lol
