I put a new 'bowl' out for them to use about a week ago. It is at the other end of the porch - further from the front door - this year. They began building their nest in it yesterday! I'll have to use a small step ladder to look into it this year tho - that part of the porch is a step lower than the part near the door!

There should be eggs there by the time I get back and I'll not have any idea when they were laid!

I'll have to remember to tell my DS to be careful out there!

Wow, Kt, congratulations on luring your little finches back. I think my tiny birds have abandoned their nest in my mail box, which is as it should be. There was going to be way too much disruption there for babies.

Have a safe and wonderful trip. Seren

Don't you just love watching the birds. I bought a new bird feeder this year, the one from last year was just for finches and didn't get any activity.

I bought this little inexpensive one plastic for $6.00, and put in in my tree and waited...I looked out the next day to see this squirrel handing upside down trying to get into the feeded...I wen tout and chased him but he was back...so I thought I'll just move it...when I went to take it down he had broked off one of the perches and chewed through the opening. So I patched it up and moved it closer to the house just along side my patio....two days later...there he is and his weight broke the holder part...

So now I go out and by one made of glass and copper for $25.00...and hang it in the tree but the little sucker manager to upset this one..now I'm determined to beat this squirrel...out I go again and I find this extension pole that you can make as long as you want and I hang the bird feeded way out on a limb of the tree away and it hangs down on this long thin metal pole away from branches...the pole was $10.00.

Finally $35.00 later, success....I beat this little stinker and now I can sit on my patio and watch the birds come and eat at my feeder. It took a few days but now I've got a steady group of customers and a pair of cardinals that are so pretty and colorful...well worth the time and money...

Enjoy your little friends and have a good trip

Val

Hi, Jackie here. I also have lots of bird friends but not any purple finches. Have three feeders around the yard, two on the edge of the woods and one at the side of the house that the little ones like. Believe it or not, DH loves the big crows and even has a special spot next to the drive where he feeds them leftovers. They love mac and cheese! Really!LOL

I think my favorites are the chickadees and cardinals. Have a goodday!
