DH's best friend from college (GT) was a lawyer, working in D.C. He & his wife divorced when their girls were just 2 and 3 yrs. old. He got custody of the girls and raised them himself. (the mother is a little out of it) Every Memorial Day, he'd bring them to our house for a week. When they started school, they come to visit for a week when school was out.

Four yrs. ago, he called to say he was coming for Memorial Day Weekend, but the girls couldn't come. When he got into town, he called and said he was going to stop for a bite to eat (it was about 7 on a Friday night)because he was meeting a few friends and he'd be at our house about 9. We waited, and waited, and waited, but he didn't show up. Then the phone rang...it was the hospital. They said that someone had a heart attack and fallen over in the street on his way into a restaurant and had died immediately. It was our friend...so DH had to go to the hospital to identify the body. Our friend was only 54.

Now the girls have graduated from college and they still come to visit us. They will be arriving tomorrow evening.

I can't wait to see them. One graduated Magma Cum Laude from Georgia Tech, the other graduated Magma Cum Laude from University of Va. They both got their degrees in electrical engineering. Their dad would have been soooo proud!!

Just wanted to share...

That is a bittersweet story and testimony to the fact that some men can be the better parent. Thanks for sharing. Kathey

Such bitter-sweet memories, Shari. The girls are lucky to have you be a part of their lives. I think they know that and that's why they have kept up the tradition of visiting at this time of year.

I hope the sun shines on you and your guests this weekend. Bye for now.

What a sad and happy story. Your relationship with those girls must be a special one.
