Queen Victoria's birhday. She was the queen who chose Ottawa as Canada's Capitol city back in the 1800's. Quite a character, too, if one can believe the history books. We celebrate with fireworks in some areas but, sadly, not here. I love fireworks :)

Thanks for asking Kacee and thank you for the special Victoria Day greeting, Katie.

I know the coming weekend is your Memorial Day weekend, and that it is a much more solemn holiday than Queen Vicki's birthday. I hope it is peaceful and fulfilling for each of you, regardless.

night for now.

How did your day go yesterday? Were there any celebrations in your area? Did you work or do they close things up for the holiday?

Memorial Day may have solemn roots, but it is celebrated quite differently today, JJ.

In the northeast it is the *official kickoff* to the summer season. Even though summer doesn't begin for several weeks, it's when people begin to plant, paint, wear lighter clothing, and have cookouts. There are fireworks and parades in many cities and towns.

We will spend our Memorial Day on Cape Cod ... resting, relaxing, eating, and of course remembering all those who lost their lives in defense of our country and loved ones who have gone before.

For us it's also a mini family reunion each year.

Queen Victoria is probably the Queen I know the most about. I have always been interested in her era and her reign. It started when I was quite young and saw her character in a movie ... a kind, gentle woman with kindness in her heart. Fact or fiction, it has stayed with me all these years.

Enjoy your weekend.

Hi JJ! Happy Victoria Day! I love all kinds of history so thanks for the little excerpt. The one thing I hate about our Memorial Day is that I just lost my mama on Thanksgiving day 2001. She chose cremation so I dont really have a gravesite to decorate withflowers. I know, I know, life goes on. But she is sorely missed. Anyway have a great day! Jackie

Hi JJ, fellow Canadian, Where do you live in Canada? Not in Quebec (where there is not much love for the Queen's birthday? l0l)? I am a native of Montreal, lived there for most of my life, moved to Toronto area in 1986 and now am in Calgary these past 5-1/2 years. I wasn't aware of any fireworks in Calgary either, to tell you the truth...it doesn't seem to be something that happens much here unless I was just not paying attention!

See ya,

Shirley

and may I add, Judy, it is the official day for wearing white shoes (lol); at least until Labor Day in September. I think some Southern Belle made up that rule. Kathey

I can't say for all over the US but after they visit the cemetary some Americans treat Memorial Day like St.Patricks day as a reason to get stupid(drunk, like they need a reason)....sorry to say. But for a lot of us the day is spent with family at a picnic.

One thing about the milkmans family since the cows have to be milked everyday, we have learned that if DH has off on Dec. 22 that is our Christmas, etc. My mother liked my DH so much that she would plan everything so he could be there. Much to the dismay of my Bro and Sis....mostly one Sis....lol....Suprise, she got over that when her kids got married and on is in the army reserves and if she wanted her family there she always has to check to make sure he can be there....it all comes home doesn't it?

Did I ever tell the first time I heard that? I was too big for a spanking and I had done something like stayed out till 2 or something. I asked my dad what he was going to do to me and he said he had done the best he knew how and it didn't work. But that some day it would all come home to me. ??? What the heck did that mean.......I would rather had a whack.......Then I had kids and they got to be my age and they did the same thing and I saw how worried I was and knew that my folks went through that too. I remember one night when one of the kids were very late cussing my dad, while I was sitting there in the dark.lol It was DD2. When she got home I think she could see how much that bothered me and, from then on if she was supposed be home and she wasn't I would get a call and she would tell me she was about done with what she was doing could she stay about 15 more min? 15 min later she was home. Wished that could have been x 5 but alas not to happen.

So sometimes maybe a punishment can be in the knowledge that they will have to go through the same thing someday.......not instant gratification but it works.....lol.....Janet
