No Thunderstorms today

So I feel safe enough gettting on the computer, getting online, coming to the Garden and visiting everyone. The last time I was here was Thurs night and I may have snuck in for a few minutes on Sat morning and it has been raining here every since. Tornado warnings and watches,Thunderstorms, flooding it has been very depressing weather down here. I took advantage of it and got some sewing done. Would have liked to have read a book or two but my glasses need to be replaced and they make my eyes hurt if I read anything too long and if I get interested in a book I tend to read it until I finish the book or pass out whatever comes first. I just wanted to let everyone know what was up. Now I want to read the rest of the board and find out what else has been happening while I was away. Aloha Kulani

Kulani - always nice to see you on the board. Don't you find that sewing is hard on the eyes as well?? I find it hard to even get the needle threaded and I just got new glasses!!! I just bought two new books and I'm trying to resist starting one of them - it's not polite to read when you have company for dinner - lol.

No JJ I could sew in my sleep. Sometimes it feels like that is what I am doing all at once I will come to myself and wonder how I got so much done and not remember all that I had done. The little ones used to laugh because I would crochet with my eyes closed. I was practicing just in case I ever go blind I will still be able to crochet and knit. Every since I was a child I have had a fear of going blind and have practiced my knitting and crocheting and threading a needle with my eyes closed. I have seen on tv how they teach blind children to use needles and thread to mend and sew on buttons when they get done it isn't too pretty but it is done. Since I know how to sew maybe mine will look better. I use a ruler to put pins in a straight row and then use the pins to sew a straight seam. So far I have managed to make a doll dress by hand and it doesn't look too bad. I am not too sure how a real dress would look. Using a machine scares me at the moment. I need to invent a fixture that would keep the fabric in place so that it would make the seam straight and I would be ok. You just can't feel a straight seam on a machine that goes about 10 miles and hour, let alone one that can go up to 25 mph and cut the fabric off at the same time. So I still need some practice. The easiest way to thread a needle is to put the thread tightly between your index finger and thumg and lay the eye of the needle onto the thread. It works every time for me. Try it and see if you can do it as well. It is how I teach little ones as young as 3 to thread a needle.

Kulani, I have never had any trouble threading a needle, but I just tried your suggestion....what a neat trick!! So much easier than aiming the thread at the eye!

Thank you for sharing that!

Welcome back, Kulani. Hope you get some nicer weather soon. If you are like me, you have had it up to here with rain.

Have a good weekend......BB
