Shopping warning

Thieves now have a gadget which can capture electronic signals from your car key lock. They cruise parking lots looking for people putting packages in cars and gather the signals. Then they watch to see which people go back to shop more. Their device quickly opens the car and it is emptied in a flash.

Solution - use the physical key to lock your doors.

Yes, they've had that "technology" for quite awhile now.

I heard this warning a month or two ago and have been trying to use the no remote technique since. I'm pretty good at remembering to use the lock from inside the car to lock but sometimes get lazy when opening the car...especially if my hands are full and that's when you are the most vulnerable to the lock scan from thieves. I'm getting better.

The trick will be up here in the winter when our locks freeze over.

I have gotten this email several times so I looked it up....

A thief with some kind of detector can't stand on the other side of the parking lot to pick up your signal when you lock your car. They have to be within a few feet.. If there are a lot of people around when you go to lock your car use the key in the door like the old days....

Actually it is faster and easier for

If your car is newer than the mid 1990's, it would be hard for a thief to break in as the auto makers have become aware of this type of crime and the code changes every time you use your remote.

Also if you do put packages in your car and intend to continue shopping. Move the car after putting the packages in.
