OK. I'm FAT. A short dumpy fat white woman. With multiple chins, saggy boobs and a GUT.

After I retired, I started baking. We started going out to lunch. We started to watch more TV. You guys know the drill. DH is packing on the pounds, too.

I read about some of you guys going to Curves. I used to work with 3 or 4 women who all stopped going because they said it didn't work. Whatever diet I try would have to appeal to "Mr. Meat-and-Potatoes" DH. (and don't let the meat touch the potatoes).

Our size Zero DD just kind of eyed us over at Christmas. I was waiting for her to say something about our weight, but she didn't.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Many of us retirees have the same issue. It's like we want to shake loose all the chains of restriction and go overboard. I've only belonged to Curves for 6 weeks, and missed 2 weeks with that miserable chest cold. I'm doing it to tone up, not lose weight. So far, my clothes are getting looser. Biggest plus is that tightening up my core muscles & my back is aching a lot less. The truth is my back problems are due to muscle weakness, not the normal disk degeneration I'm had. The curve in my spine makes my muscles work overtime trying to keep me straight. With the new exercises, I'm walking taller.

As for what you eat, I can tell you how DH lost 20 lbs in 2 months - he finally looked at the calorie count on snacks he was eating daily and found it was a whopping 1000 calories he didn't need. So, he tried substituting salt free saltines with peanut butter or 2% cheese instead of the packaged stuff. That's the biggest change he made. Maybe you and DH need to just figure out a few high calorie items in your intake & find a substitute.

Right now I'm following a plan that adds a beneficial oil to my diet. Biggest plus is that it has reduced my appetite and my blood sugar numbers are better. I read the basics in a magazine, here's the actual study -

I'm in that dumpy line, too, Gail. they were talking about diets on one of the news programs this morning. The doctor said, "don't spend your life trying to lose weight, spend it being healthy".

I have one of thos size zero daughters, too, sickening, isn't it (lol)

((HUGS)). I was short and fat a little over a year ago. Then I developed GERD, then most recent I found out I had Celic's disease. Wondered why

I am amazed at the weight loss stories I've heard at Curves. I think their idea of setting a 3 month goal, taking weight & measurements, then checking every month is the kind of accountability a lot of us need. I even put the date on our new calendar!

Wow guys!! Thanks for all your encouragment and support. I must admit that I have cabin fever that's making me kind of "down". I did look on the Curves website and found that the first 30 days is free. Since there's one approx. 6 miles from home, I think I might check it out. DH and I want a long, healthy retirement together so we need to eat healthier and get regular exercise.

You guys are just wonderful!!

It takes 21 days to learn a new habit.

Be sure to see if you are required to pay the joining fee - it's hefty. I joined in Nov. & that fee was waived. As each location is a separate franchise, they may have their own specials going on. I'd call the local one and ask if they have any such program going on. I figure the $34 I spend each month gets me out of the house at least 3x/week. We could spend this much on dinner out and have nothing to show for it, so I don't feel guilty.

Believe it or not, I am always hesitant to talk with new people, always figure I have nothing to say. But, when the gals are together and working out, it becomes sort of a round-robin affair. Amazing the things I'm learning. Already know that they have periodic road trips to local theater productions and am going to sign up for the next one.

I am you but adding bad back vascular problems, heart surgery and now I have nothing in my knees keeping my bones from banging each other on both legs so I can't walk far or stand for very long.

My husband is diabetic and is far from over weight he lost his when they told him he had diabetes and never put it back on. Lucky me he will eat whatever I fix but and never makes suggestions either...that would help me know what he would like every once in a while.

So my problem is that I do know how to eat but inactivity kept me fat. I am now riding the stationary bike trying to maybe get rid of some of my belly that might help my back a bit.

I have never been to Curves but I can tell you this if you make even a small change in what you eat, mainly eat smaller portions and go to Curves because you can still move I am sure that you will see a difference and if your husband says anything just tell him you want to be around to spend his life insurance.....or something if you can joke with him..

You won't be sorry being able to move I sure wish I could.

Find someone at curves that you can connect with and that you can talk to that will help also. Then you can come back here and let us know how you are doing too. I am not sure but I don't think there are very many size 0s here....lol....

I don't want to be a 0 anyway.....lol I would settle for about 14-16......lol

Thanks for the inspiration! I've gotten myself in shape before - for my daughter's wedding in 2006. I walked every morning at 6am for 3-5 miles and I stopped eating chocolate, cookies, marshmallows, potato chips, gravy, ice cream, cake, snapple ice tea. well, you get the idea. I did shape up and lose weight and I looked really good for the wedding. Wore a size 10! Then my mother got sick and died, my daughter got divorced and we moved to a very rural area where we didn't know anybody. Enough whining!!!! I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna get in shape.

Your knees remind me of my mom. She had no cartilege in one knee and refused to have it replaced. She was in constant pain from bone on bone. We pleaded with her, her doctor begged, the orthopedist did everything he could to make her comfortable. No surgery. When she was dying of cancer, and getting weaker everyday, she said she wished she had done her knee!

Spend my hubby's life insurance $.................hum. He is worth more dead than alive. But, then I'd have to clean the house, and load the pellet stove, and shovel the snow, and change the water filter by myself. I'd rather stay semi-poor, I think.
