Jacquie
I remember that when goods were collected locally for other overseas disasters, they wound up being donated to local charities because there was no way to ship overseas.
As a former export manager, I know how much red tape it takes to get a single carton on a ship.

I'm so glad you posted that link Jacquie. All I've heard in the last couple of days was the importance of donating only money. Do NOT send clothing, water, personal items, etc. The money will be spent to help the local economy and to buy what the people need the most as determined by the relief effort people.
Personally, I am not a supporter of The American Red Cross. It's just a personal thing with me for the way they treated my father when he was in the Army. But that's just me. I know many people have been helped by them personally and that is good.
I usually donate to UNICEF or UMCOR (which is through the Methodist Church). I heard President Clinton speak and he also has a fund set up and all funds collected will go directly to Haiti.
God bless your son Jacquie for the work he is doing for the people of Haiti.
DS is part of UMCOR. He collects $$ to take on their annual mission. This $$ is used to pay the local workers who are doing 90% of the actual building. That way they have some income and a vested interest in guarding the building and help keeping it up. The old "teach a man to fish" scenario.
Latest news is that DSs Feb. trip will be greatly delayed. Their school is in Thor, very remote area and roads have been decimated.

That's good to hear Jacquie. It's a wonderful organization that I truly believe in.
