Well...............Our house in Vermont is bordered by a tributary of the Williams River. This morning started with rain and wind and a warmer temperature. We noticed that the river was running higher and there was a lot more water rushing past. My DH went outside with his camera to get pictures and walked along our property line. When he came in he said that there was a lot of ice building upstream and he thought the water might come over the bank. He wasn't in the house very long when we could see the water really start to rise. I went upstairs to the guest room to look out the windows and all of a sudden the water started rushing right toward our house! I started screaming "my house! my house!" and DH called 911. The water started flowing right past our front door when it should have been 100 feet in the back of our house!
It took awhile for the Town/Fire Dept./Rescue to get to us because our road was washed out. We were able to wrestle out cats out from under our bed (in the process of doing this our bed frame broke so half the box spring is in the air and the other is on the floor) and we put them both in the one pet carrier we have. They weren't happy to say the least. I was determined that, if I had to leave my home, I wasn't gonna go without my babies. We packed up meds and clean underwear and waited.
The Town brought heavy equipment and started knocking down trees and moving earth to divert the water to save our house. They were here for hours. I kept waiting for the wall of our house to collapse. But it didn't!!! We could hear ice smashing against the side of the house and a couple of trees were swept right past our house but didn't hit it. The water was so strong that it pushed by car right into the side of DHs car and a tree smashed into the back of my car. There is now 3 or 4 feet of ice pushed over the hoods of our cars. We had just installed a generator which was smashed against the house. I played the piano to keep myself calm.
BUT, WE'RE OK!! They successfully re-routed the water. There had been approx. a foot of water in our basement which is going down because we were able to open the door. The propane was shut off so we don't have a stove or central heat. But we have our pellet stove. Our insurance agent and our propane company will be here tomorrow. We didn't lose our home and we didn't have to leave. Tomorrow we'll get outside and see what kind of damage was done and how much property we lost. We have to boil our water for a few days since we have a well.
Sorry for the rant but I do feel a lot better, now! Gail

God bless you Gail!!
That's a Horror Story!
You must have been scared to death!!
I can't imagine such a sight and the fact that it happened so quickly too.
So thankful the First Responders acted quickly and were able to divert the water.
OMG Gail!!! Here I've been so worried about Donna and the storm she's been having in S.D. I had no idea what you were going through out there!! My heart is pounding reading your post. I can't imagine what you and your DH (and furbabies) went through today and all the damage that torrent of ice and water has done to your cars and property. I'm so glad you didn't lose your home and that you didn't have to leave but I'm so very sorry for everything you've gone through. What a trooper you were to have been able to play the piano through all of it. I would have been a screaming banshee!!!!
Thank you for coming to the Garden and sharing with us so we can all send our prayers and good wishes your way. Please stay in touch and let us know how it's going.
Ladybug hugs...
big hugs,
Thank goodness you, your DH, and your furbabies are all okay, Gail!
OMG Gail, I am so glad you all are unscathed and still have a home. That had to be so terrifying . I am not sure I would have stayed calm enough to play the piano. I hope the insurance company is good and your home and cars are back to
Gail, how scary!
