I LOVED seeing all the athletes proudly representing their countries and marching in together...However, I found the ceremony BORING this year.
Let's just say I watched it with one ear and finally just went to bed.
I didn't stay up for the whole thing,
I'm an Olympics nut (always have been) so I was anxious to see the opening ceremony. I agree that there were some highlights but all in all didn't think it was "all that and a bag of chips." I think they knew they couldn't compete with Beijing (can anyone ever?) so didn't even try. I think they really overdid the "tribes" stuff. Enough is enough. I did like some of the special effects though...like Shari, I loved the whales and then the ice breaking up and becoming water and the salmon run. That was pretty cool. (Shari, loved your friend's comment about the pinata man! LOL)
My very favorite is always the Parade of Nations and it was so poignant last night when Georgia came in with their black scarves and arm bands in honor of the 21 year old luge competitor that had died yesterday. My heart broke for that team of 7. You could see it on their faces how deeply they were affected and how moved they were at the standing ovation and support they received.
Let the games begin...love 'em!!!
I got to the guy fighting or dancing with his shadow (the fiddler?) and I was gone. I couldn't keep my eyes open. I'm pushing through my housekeeping chores this morning so I can watch when the broadcast starts this afternoon. I'll have to record tonight. I have ballet tickets.
Hugs,
Melissa
Deb, I only wanted to watch the parade of the nations especially after the very tragic luge accident. To watch the delegation of that country was very sad and heartwarming. However, I missed the show after the parade entirely so it looks like I didn't miss much.
Right at the start Matt Lauer said that this is not the China SUMMER olympics and because they have so many people no one should expect that there will ever be an opening like that again ever. That said.....
I liked that they let the atheletes come in first and be a part of the ceremony clear through the whole thing. What they did was beautiful, happy, kind of funny in some spots and flawless untill they went to light the cauldren.....lol.......But other than that it was nice.
Matt said that as grand as the summer olympics were the atheletes didn't get to see it live. Now they are there for them so they should be able to see it. I didn't watch the last one because there were over 200 nations that had to march in and I wasn't going to stay up for that.. This year there were less than 90. Still I think they could (except for the host country) double time it a bit....... And the Olympics should be a place that politics are left out but they had to seperate a couple of the countries.... they could have started it earlier too I think......
And the loss of that young man and to see the whole thing on tv was hard to take even though you knew he had already passed while the medics were working on him you thought there was a little hope.......Sad........
But I thought it was ok...
Retired and lovin'it.
Well, duh!
