Starting today iVillage is implementing a new form of advertising on message board pages. These ads, known as contextual advertising, are appearing as double underlined keywords within the messages boards and messages. A small advertising window appears when users 'mouse over' these keywords and if you let your cursor hover there to long an advertising page will open.
Some of you may have already spotted one or two of them and wondered about them!
The decision was made to implement these ads within the message boards in order help offset the cost of operating such a large community site as a free service. We have been told that, in an effort to be sensitive to our users' needs, these ads will not appear within communities that deal with loss, infertility, crisis situations or other sensitive topics and that all users will have the ability to opt-out of seeing these ads if they wish. The link to disable this feature will be provided in the iVillage FAQ pages and can be found at the bottom of each message board page.
So far I've seen only a couple and they do not seem to be too obnoxious!!!

You are loved ~~ far more than you may ever know!

Yep already seen then and thought WT.... Oh well, I don't have problem with it so far. But it sure was an "O" moment for sure.
I've noticed them too Katie...thank you for pointing out exactly what they are. So far they haven't bothered me either. We'll see....
I see you have answered the question about the ads in our text.
I'm with you, Donna.

To be honest, I think they are kind of stupid.
I'm afraid we are "stuck" with this form of advertising, ladybugs!
But it is far better than what was being suggested (and what so many of the CLs fought against!!!) which was to actually put banner ads immediately following the first post in every string on the board!
I don't particularly like it, but it is something I can live with!

Hi Kt,
Obviously I need to read your messages more carefully. My first experience with "in-text" ads just happened, and now I'm looking into how to turn them off. I thought we had some kind of mystery word game going on that I'd missed the instructions for until a mystery word appeared in my post to Shirley Sue. LOLOL!
I guess I have issues with subliminal advertising. I feel uneasy knowing that I can't type the word cof-ee without IV "using" it without my permission. Okay, enough rant. I'm off to do something about it!
Hugs,
Melissa
Well that appeared to be easy enough. Guess I'll have to see if it worked.
coffee
HA! it worked.
Hugs,
Melissa
