DSIL's friend and his daughter who just graduated from high school went to Louisiana to help with the wildlife rescue. He went on line and found some environmental group that was calling for volunteers. They emailed him a release form. He emailed them back and asked if he was to bring it with him, fax it or what? They didn't reply.
They arrived and the volunteer said that she had to interview them to see where they'd fit in the best. Don't you think that should have been done earlier (his question)? A whole day was wasted. They said that he could cook special meals fore the vegans there. He said no. So they told him to go fishing.
The pelicans were very stressed and weren't eating because they only had frozen fish. So he went to a bait shop where the clerk was 19 yrs. old. He said he wanted his 200 bait fish. The man asked why and the friend explained. The man said, "Let me show you something." He took him over to a state map and showed him where he and all his relatives lived. He said that they were all fisherman and didn't know how they were going to survive. Then he shook the friends hand and said simply, "Thank you." That made the whole trip worth it according to the friend.
When he returned the person asked him where he got the fish. Now he said that you cannot think of everything so he didn't hold that against them. When they said to put in a request to be reimbursed, friend got upset. He said that he came to volunteer and didn't need to be reimbursed the $40.
According to the friend the groups doing the volunteer work are very disorganized and are wasting precious time. For the young man in the bait shop, he'd go again.
Have a great day.

What a story!
There are suppose to be a lot of organizations out there to volunteer and there are paying jobs out there for the clean up. Sad he had to go to those lengths just to volunteer, stupid people.
