Hello everyone,

I've heard some women talk about taking PN vitamin's while TTC. I tried them a long time ago and they made me feel ill. Anyone have anything to offer in that area? Do you take them? Do they make you feel sick? How you do you combat that or do you just live with it? Thanks!

Hi Susan! You're just taking over-the-counter prenatals? It's the iron, I'm pretty sure, that's making you sick. I'd just go with a really good multi-vitamin, Folic Acid, and of course, don't forget your calcium (~1000 mg daily) and you'll be just fine without the feeling sick. When you do get your bfp make sure you tell your ob/gyn that over-the-counter prenatals make you sick...I think there may be different types of prescription prenatals that he/she could try to help you keep those babies down, which are so needed for little fetuses to grow. GL and I hope to see you posting bfp soon!!!! Huge (((((hugs))))) LOLove, Connie

I recently asked my Doctor about taking pre-natal vitamins and she said all I needed to do was take a folic acid supplement. The multi-vitamin I've been taking for several months now has the recommended daily amount of folic acid in it so that's all I'm doing. I'm also trying to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables and drink lots of tomato juice and fruit juice so that I'm good and healthy for that BPF! (Fingers crossed...)

Thanks Connie! You write so eloquently and your words are so caring and kind! Yes, awhile back I did try taking a prenatal thinking it would help with my TTC (been trying since Sept 2001) but they made me queasy and gross all day long. I did ask my PCP about them and he too suggested a good multi-vitamin with folic acid which I do take and is fine (no yuckies.) I just thought I'd ask the board and already I feel better just from two replies that say to simply take a good multi-vitamin. So I'll keep plugging along and here we go on our next try, I'm on cd4 today. Thanks again!

Hi Susan,

You probably already got the answer you were looking for, but I thought I'd offer another trick I've found. When I started taking prenatals, I was afraid they'd make me sick, too, so I tried to combat that from the beginning. I take them at night, and I've never had a problem with them. I just make it a part of my nightly routine...brush my teeth, take my vitamin, put my thermometer on top of my alarm clock. :) I figure if I go to sleep right after I take them, I don't give them a chance to make me sick! Good luck to you!

Well there is always the option of getting just a regular multi vitamin with folic acid. I am taking a prenatal vitamin mainly because I work in an OB office so I have access to them. They don't make me sick. But there are different kinds that you could try. Just give your OB a call if you want. Good luck

I just take One-a-Day Women's formula (multivitamin) - it's got 100% of your RDI of folic acid, which is what you really need at this point.

This is exactly what my Dr said. I just want to stress again you MUST, MUST, MUST take FOLIC ACID if you are TTC. DO NOT wait until you are pg!!!!!!! I just can't stress this enough....

I have been taking a multi viatiam, targets brand. My OB/GYN recommended them. They have not made me feel sick. Maybe try those.

OK, here's my prenatal vitamin theory.

Just take them. I know I know, they make you constipated and sick, they are a pain to take, and as long as you are an average non-3rd-world person, you probably don't even need them. Still, just take them.

You see, I've had 2 pregnancies. I handled both of them about the same. I didn't take prenatals in either one. They made me sick and I didn't like the idea of NEEDING to take vitamins when humans have been pregnant plenty of times in history without them. I did pop a flinstone now and then. My first baby was born at a HUGE 9 pounds 7 ounces. A perfect baby boy. My daughter was born at 8 pounds 12 ounces and another perfect baby - although she was stillborn. Her stillbirth had NOTHING to do with vitamins. Nothing at all. She was a well nurished, plump, beautiful little girl. But it doesn't matter. If anything goes wrong in your pregnancy, you will search your mind for anything you've ever done while TTC or pregnant that was suboptimal. You will settle on every little thing you did wrong and blame yourself for that. In the light of that, gagging down a horse pill of a vitamin once a day isn't such a big deal.

Just take em.

I have been taking prenatals for 14 months and in the beginning they made me feel very sick. I started taking them at night and haven't had a problem since! It's also easier for me to remember when I am going to bed and see them on my nightstand rather than when I am rushing out the door in the morning.
