Anyone else RH - ?????

Hi girls. I was just wondering how many of us are RH - out there. I am. I found out about 7-8 years ago. Have you talked about this with your doctor? We haven't really discussed it much. I'm assuming we'll talk about it after I get pregnant. I have a SIL who is an RN and she said I will need to get a series of shots throughout my pregnancy and after the birth. Does that sounds about right?

I'm RH- also, and am a maternity nurse. Your SIL is right...you will get a shot called Rhogam at 28 weeks from your OB to protect the baby should he or she be RH+. Then, after you give birth, if your baby is RH+ you will get a second shot of the Rhogam within 72 hours.

As long as you receive these shots, there is nothing to be worried about.

Shawn,

I am RH- and my husband is +, and that is where the problem comes in. if an RH- mom is pregnant with an RH+ baby (which can only happen with a + daddy), and the mom's blood and the baby's blood mix at any time the mom's body can form antibodies that can attack any future RH+ baby (thinking it is a foreign object). This problem is solved by the rhogam shot which you get any time you have bleeding in a pregnancy, at 28 weeks and after you give birth. I have three kids (for a total of 8 shots...ouch!!!) and all are wonderfully healthy. So, it is nothing to worry about!!!don't you love medical science!!!!

GOD Bless and have a H&H 9 months!!!!!

The first two responses are correct. I am also RH-, my husband is RH+, and we have had two babies that are RH+. One shot at 28 weeks, and then another right after the birth - and I'd gladly go through it again!!

Hey Shawn. I am RH- and hubby is RH-, so I never had to have any of the shots! I agree with what everyone else is saying about the shots, though. They are definitely worth it!

God bless and good luck!

What does RH- mean? I know it has to do with blood type...does it mean that anyone with a negative blood type should be sure to check into this? Is this something routine that a doctor will check for once we become pg? My blood type is B-, so I just wanted to check.

Thanks!

Well, I think the RN's (Registered Nurse) on here could answer the question but I believe if someone is O- or AB- or whatever - then you are RH-. Correct?

Check with your doctor on this because if you ARE negative then you have to get these shots. No if, and's or but's about it. :)

I need to see if my husband is -. If he is, then I don't have to worry about anything AND I don't have to get the shots. Whoohoo!!!

GL to all you ladies. Thank you all for the great information. It has put my mind as ease.

Thanks!!!!

Ok girls,

I am RH - and my husband is +. When I was pregnant with DS I got a shot at 28 weeks but I never got another one. My son is neg. Don't know if that has anything to do with it. We are in the military and they do not start Hep shots in the hospital either. I know some hospitals do. It is all a little confusing.

Good luck to you all.
