I know I should know this, but my excuse is that I'm new to the process. I never had to think about it before. I've read bits and pieces of information, but I'm having trouble pieceing them all together.

Without further ado, can someone please explain the timing of the fertilization process? I know you ovluate (LOL, obviously!!) but how long does it take for the egg and sperm to meet? If the egg is fertilized, how long before implantation? When do symptoms start?

Help! I'd like to know just when everything I HOPE is going to happen actually does happen.

Thanks very much!

You know you should take out the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility at your local library. It's very informative and describes the whole process of cycles and fertilization. I found it helped answer many of my questions.

As far as how long it takes for an egg to be fertilized, well that really depends on when you had intercourse and when the egg is released. It can take days to happen. Once it is fertilized, implantation usually occurs 2-12 days after fertilization. Once implanted, your body starts to produce HCG, and then symptoms would follow. Most of the time women don't have any real symptoms until their period is due, and sometimes later than that. HTH.

Hi Kristin,

Ok, from memory, this is what I think:

the actual meeting of sperm and egg happens the day after ovulation. About a week after ovulation, the fertilzed egg implants into the cervical wall.

Everyone varies as far as symptoms go.

Can anyone tell me if I'm on the right track?

Kristin-

Basically, the sperm should already be waiting for the egg before you ovulate. It is said that the sperm can live around 3-5 days, but an egg only lives around 12-24 hours. So it's best to schedule the BD prior to when you O just to make sure the egg and sperm can meet. You want the sperm to have found their way into your fallopian tubes before you O.

Also, implantation usually occurs around 5 days after ovulation, give or take.

You might want to get a copy of Taking Charge of your Fertility. It's a great book and really helped me out alot!

Good Luck

Hey there, Kristin! First of all, here's a documentary that explains in ultimate detail everything you could EVER want to know: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/miracle/program.html

It's a bit long, but unbeleivable so if you can, you should watch it.

Here's what I know. Sperm need approx. 12 hours to swim into position and morph into their hard helmuts to penetrate the egg. They can last up to 5 days, but most normally will last about 2 days, gradually dying off. The egg will only last 12-24 hours tops, so that's why it's so important to bd BEFORE "o" occurs. From the time that they meet, it takes about 4-5 days before implantation will occur. It takes this long for the egg and sperm to join and travel down the tubes to the uterus. It may float around the uterus a bit(I havn't watched the film in a while) and will find a spot in the lining to implant. Most of the pregnancy calendars have implantion occuring at 5-6DPO, but it can vary person to person. After implantation is when HCG(preg hormone) starts being produced. Symptoms can start anytime from here on in depending on the levels that are being produced and the persons sensitivity to it. Many of the early pg symptoms are not from HCG, but from the increased progesterone levels that occur after implantation. This is what causes a temp rise (triphasic) and symptoms that are so similar to PMS.

I hope this helps you! It may not be medically exact, but that's what I know.

Thanks so much to everyone! This helps a lot. I know the process -- I mean, I know what happens, I just wasn't sure of the timing. I'll definitely check out the recommended book AND I'll check out the website and video too.

You guys are so great! I knew if I asked that someone (or multiple someones!) would have a good answer for me!

Thanks again! And good luck to one and all!
