question about cycle timing-AF 10dpo????

Hi ladies - I am looking for some understanding because I am totally confused....
This is month 3 TTC but first month charting and using OPK. Charting didn't really work because I had a really bad cold in the middle of my cycle but I got a strong + on the OPK on Aug13th and 14th (CD 15 and 16). BD both days. So I figure I O'd on the 15th... so why is AF here today? it is cd26 for me. AF seems a little darker and there were some clots - could it be a really early early MC? I am looking forward to charting more acurately this month to help me understand but can anyone make any sense of this?
Maybe this is a dumb questiong but I thought AF always came 14 days after O in which case the OBK was wrong or late or something??? GRRRRRRRRRRR.............

I'm sorry to hear that AF showed early this month. I hope it's a fluke and not a m/c!
AF can come anytime after O. If it comes before 10 days you could have a Luteal Phase defect. If AF comes beyond 18-20 days you might not be ovulating.
It is a misconception in many books, doctor offices, and pregnancy websites that AF shows up 14 days after O. These people assume a 28 day cycle where O happens 14 days after AF shows and then shows up again 14 days after. Not many people fit that mold.
I'm one of those people who don't follow the textbook. I'm a 24 day cycle with a 10 day Luteal Phase (from O to AF). I O on CD14. My doctor says this is a normal cycle. I have a good O and then enough time for the egg to implant.
I would recommend Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. This book opened my eyes about my cycle. I think most of the women here on this board use this book too!
Please keep us up to date on your progress!

That time between O and AF is called your Luteal Phase (LP).
Usually, a woman's LP is between 10 and 15 days. It's usually the same length every month for that woman. I'm typically a 12 day-er myself.
The time before you O, is what's changeable. I've O'd anywhere from day 10 to day 15. Others are much more irregular.
The one thing to know about LP is that if you're usually shorter than 10 days you need something from your doctor. Something about not having something... maybe progesterone... I'm not sure. Someone else would know for sure.
Charting again this month will help you figure out where you are. I think you're ok. The fun part about ttc, there isn't much that is "normal". LOL! Those textbook 28 day cycles don't happen for hardly anyone. (No wonder the rythm method doesn't work! :) )
Just my thoughts,
Mary
Thank you both - makes me feel more normal to know there is no normal! *phew* The only good thing about AF is being able to count the days till the next BD Fest! It is hard not to get obsessed and to think something is terrible wrong because this month I felt like we did everything right. BUT both DH and I had a terrible cold and low grade fevers so that could effect both me and his swimmers... I will start charting again tomorrow and this month could be it - they say practice makes perfect and I would love a June baby! (summer maternity leave - an added bonus....)
thanks again, I have been lurking for a couple of months but today I really needed a little support!

We actually waited after getting married so that we'd have a warm weather baby.
I suppose if it doesn't happen soon, I'll be a bit less picky about when to place maternity leave! LOL!
Hey, feel free to join us in the June Bugs posts in the Hosting AF folder. We're all around 1-3 days into this cycle, so you'd fit right in.
Best of Luck!
Mary
