Hi ladies, I posted this on my playgroup board too but I figured I might have luck here as well...

Okay, so first off... I am one of those people who totally doesn't understand the female reproductive system. I mean, for the most part I get the basics but beyond that I don't even really try to fully understand what goes on. So, I know most of you ladies might as well have a degree in the subject so I'm going to ask what could quite possibly be a totally stupid question... please don't judge! haha
So, all the experts say (or so I've heard) that you need to be at a certain point of your cycle in order to conceive. This makes sense to me as far as fertilizing an egg and what not... supposedly you need to be ovulating in order to make a baby. But here's where I get confused... you also always hear everybody else saying, if you have sex - you can get pregnant! Period! So... which is accurate? Is it totally impossible to get pregnant unless you're ovulating? (and do I understand this right, ovulation is typically 10 days after the start of your period?) or is it just easier to get pregnant when ovulating?
Help me out here...
Thanks in advance!!

The only stupid questions are the ones people fail to ask. ;-) I'm no expert, but this is the way I understand it.
Every woman is different in when they ovulate. Typicaly, the ovulation window is 10 to 17 days after the first day of a womans cycle, but may occur anytime after menses (bleeding) has stopped, and there are women who ovulate 20 days or later in their cycle (I fall into this category myself). Since semen can live anywhere from 2 to 6 days in healthly cervical fluid, a women who does not chart their monthly cycles with OPK tests &/or daily temperature monitoring could as they say "get pregnant any time of the month."
There is a wonderful site called fertilityfriend.com that has a lot of wonderful information for free for anyone who would like to understand their own monthly cycle better. I'm no expert as I said, & there are MANY here who understand it better than I do, but I hope this helps!
