Need help with a crazy problem

Hi everyone-

On three occasions I have had a strange thing happen. I'll be online, either on AOL or IE, when suddenly I can't type anything or else it will be in all caps. Examples: Today I couldn't login to my bank acct. It just wouldn't type the numbers at all. Then, I tried to reply to an email and it came out all caps but the caps lock was not on. When I turned it on, the letters came out small. It was the opposite of normal, yet either way, I couldn't type a period, only the "greater than" sign that's on that key. Same thing happened when I tried to type in the address box on IE. And when I try to backup and delete it, it highlights the letters. Very frustrating! Also, when I click to make my mouse engage to scroll down, it highlights everything from that point and above. The only thing I can do is shut down and wait a few minutes, then start up again. Could this be a Windows XP glitch? I've had this Gateway computer since January and this just started happening this week. I noticed the box that has the settings for "filter keys" has popped up a couple of times. I tried turning it on and off, but to no avail. I don't know if that's the problem or not. Should I call Gateway? I guess they would know if it's a Windows problem or if I've got something set wrong. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Oh, one more thing, which is a separate problem. I have a Microsoft optical mouse and sometimes (like a few minutes ago when I had typed this whole message in) I'll accidentally bump the left side with my thumb and then what I had typed vanishes and I have to start over. How do I get it back?

Thanks in advance.

A couple of years ago I had something similar happen to me. What had happened was one of my kids downloaded something that had a trojan in it. The "owner" of the trojan was just messing with me when I was online. I'd try to scroll up and it would go down, right click and left click on the mouse were reversed. Sometimes the colors and fonts would change. Is your antivirus program updated? Make sure you have the newest definitions.

Yes, I have Norton Internet Security and I update it weekly. I have noticed it's been stopping a lot of Trojan horse intrusions lately. Maybe it missed one? How did you figure out what was going on in your situation? It's sure aggravates me when it happens. Thanks for your opinion.

I don't remember what I was using for antivirus back then but I did go to housecalls free online virus scan by Trend. I don't remember that exact address but I think you can access it by going to trend.com or something like that. Ever since, I've used Trend's PC Cillin and haven't had any more problems.

The Optical Mouse has a "soft" button on the left side which is configurable to do anything you want.

You are the first person I ever heard that sang the praises of the side buttons on the optical mouse.. I cuss mine. Part of it is my fat little fingers too....lol.And I don't seem to be able to turn them off.....lol.......I hardly ever use the wheel either. I saw an optical mouse the other day that was about a third the price of mine that didn't have the side buttons. I

Thanks, Donna. I knew the left button was a back button, but didn't know if I was doing something else that caused me to lose things. It's only happened to me a couple of times, but my DH and DS can't use it at all without losing their work and then I hear a lot of grousing about the mouse! I personally like the mouse, although I know I don't really know all that it can do. I never learned about all the features. But I love the scroll wheel and can't use one without it, while my two guys can't seem to get the hang of it at all. Do you think it's "man" thing that they hit the left button all the time and can't scroll? :-)

Also good advice about checking Microsoft's site for help with the other problem. Thanks again.

I think I went to Trend's website a couple of years ago when I had my old computer. Maybe I'll check it out. I've been pretty happy with my Norton but maybe I'll check it out. Thanks.

I clear my cache fairly often, but not since things went haywire, so good idea. Maybe that will help. Thanks.
