On the last two computers I had the monitor would turn off and on when I turned the computer off or on. With the newest one (Compaq) it doesn't and I often forget to turn off the monitor. Is there something I can click or program to have the monitor shut off when the computer is shut off?

I don't know, come to think of it I think my 98 computer would do that too.......but the Dell, I have to shut off the monitor myself. I have a little green light that is on when the monitor is on but when it goes black when windows shuts down it blinks at me and I know to shut it off. Most of the time I go through the Start, Shutdown, Confirm and then wait till the final closing sound, shut off the speakers and stand there with my finger on the monitor button till it goes black then I push the button. Then turn off the lamp, turn and stub a toe getting out of here to the hallway.......lol..........

I don't think there is any way to have it done for you. Just get a routine and so it is easier to remember to shut it off....Janet

Thanks, Janet. Maybe I should get a Clapper. Aren't we getting lazy when it takes too much energy to push another button (lol). The light on the monitor is green when the computer is on but orange when the computer is off or in stand-by.

I'll trying getting into a routine but do I have to include the toe stubbing?

Donna my long term is not any better than my short term.......but I think I had to turn the monitor on the old one but I just don't remember. I know there were no lights at all when it was off. But I didn't have any standby modes set because at first I was having trouble with the computer and once I turned off the standby I got along better....I think that was a Win 98 problem I remember reading about a lot of people not being able to use the hibernate on their machines.

This computer that I have now is an energy star monitor but if I shut down the

Yes, Janet, I can use the extra exercise but what will I do with all the muscle built up in my index finger?

I downloaded the program you gave, Donna, but I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it. The old computer had the Energy Star on the Windows screen when I booted up, this one has the Compaq screen and I don't see the Energy Star. When I use the Compaq, the light on the monitor is green; when I turn the Compaq off (but not the monitor) the light on the monitor is orange.

I am curious why one needs to shut off the monitor at all?

I guess it is just to let the monitor cool down completely. When you leave your's on with the black screen does it have a small picture of some sort bouncing around? That's just to keep the "black" image from freezing into your picture.

Turning off your monitor during prolonged periods of inactivity makes sense, because the less it's used, the longer it's life will be.
