Reminds me of the old story about the lady that was arrested in the grocery store for eating 1 grape.

They say it is ok to burn a copy of a DVD that you already own to make a copy of it for your own use.

DVD is the new generation of optical disc storage technology. DVD is essentially a bigger, faster CD that can hold cinema-like video, better-than-CD audio, still photos, and computer data. DVD aims to encompass home entertainment, computers, and business information with a single digital format. It has replaced laserdisc, is well on the way to replacing videotape and video game cartridges, and could eventually replace audio CD and CD-ROM. DVD has widespread support from all major electronics companies, all major computer hardware companies, and all major movie and music studios. With this unprecedented support, DVD became the most successful consumer electronics product of all time in less than three years of its introduction. In 2003, six years after introduction, there were over 250 million DVD playback devices worldwide, counting DVD players, DVD PCs, and DVD game consoles. This was more than half the numbers of VCRs, setting DVD up to become the new standard for video publishing.

I copied that from another place.......but I think that CD burners will be gone with Floppies maybe not the next generation of computers but I'll be it will in the one after that. They hold more not just video. And boy will it be nice to have jut one format instead of messing with all of the other stuff. I have a DVD player in my computer but have never used it. I don't watch DVD Movies either. I can't watch everything on my little dish....lol......We have an extra dish that we take with us in our camper. And just bring the reciever from home. Sure beats trying to watch over the air tv while we are camping.

I didn't mean to sound like I was scolding you, a lot of people have recorded the movies and and music. But I am told that it is not easy to do and it takes hours. And I am chicken about getting caught.....lol......

Also a lot of people that went to the music places also got viruses and things. When you open your computer to people you don't know it isn't a good thing.

I also thought that if Sassy found out what was involved that maybe she would change her mind....lol.....I don't know if the office would be really happy if she tied up a computer for hours downloading DVDs.

When all the smoke about the illegal music downloads had cleared a bit, I had heard not only were people getting viruses by doing this but the quality of the CDs were not real good. So why do they do it? I guess because they can.

I joined BMG years ago I have dozens of CDs when they have my kind of music.....lol.... and I bet a lot of them didn't cost me the price of a new CD by the time I had figured that there were times that I bought one and got 2 free and any number of CDs for $2.99 each. I couldn't waste my time for that price.

And if and when I get a DVD player I think that I will be renting from http://www.netflix.com/Default

Sassy, please trust Janet's and Donna's words on the legality of copying things; I trust their judgement. But you might be putting your job in jeopardy by using the company computer for your personal use. Whatever you do, even if it's sending a personal email, find out what the company policy is.

I forgot all about that part, the one DVD won't work in one player etc.....and the price of them I am not sure since I have never bought any. I have not had a problem with CDs and using the cheap ones. That argument goes around like leaving the computer on or turning it off...... I have not had a problem with the cheap CDs and others say they won't use anything but the expencive ones. Gee.........lol......Since you put more time and effort into DVDs I would say like I would say to people printing their own photos use the best you can find.

I never saw the difference in the cheap or the expencive VCR tapes either. Oh, well I am about to dump all of them anyway..lol........

I know with photos if you do the best paper, ink and a good printer that the price I can have them printed at Kodak is cheaper per photo and I know they do a good job. So by the time you buy quality DVD, put in hours downloading etc..... I would say that if I was going to get some for kids to watch I see them in the grocery store the kids movies and cartoon DVD for around $5 or a lot less........that looks good to me.......lol....Janet

Responding to various snippets throughout this thread...

The main reasons for having a DVD burner on your computer are (a) you can burn your own movies from your Camcorder and other sources, and (b) you can store computer data on a DVD, not just videos.

That is very interesting. I didn't know so much time was involved--thought it was just like copying to a floppy. No wonder my daughter's friend has been spending a year making his singing CD.
