I have a friend who has an icon in his control panel with no name. It looks like a white letter S on a red ball. He can right click and the only options are open and create a short cut. Clicking open does nothing. I created a short cut and put it on the desktop and checked the properties and it was blank. He's got AVG, ran housecalls, spybot, adaware, spyguard, checked his MSConfig, startup, checked his task manager and can't find a thing. I had him check his add/remove programs, too and there was nothing there pertaining to that icon. Does anyone have any ideas? He wants to just ignore it but it's driving me nuts! Icons don't just appear in the control panel.

It is probably some sort of spyware or maybe even a trojan that isn't being picked up.
Did you look in startup to see if it is in there?
Have a nice day !.

1.A former piece of hardware like a palm pilot and the icon was used to synchronize the device. In which case its easy to remove from "add/remove" programs and or editing the ini file or registry.
2.A stronger suspect, sounds like a worm similiar to the old love bug. Go to www.securitytango.com and dance the tango.
