Don't know what info you need to help me. Win XP Home Ed has recently been installed on Granddaughter's computer. At that time we also boosted the memory to 256. We have DSL. However, her computer freezes whenever she goes online. Can you help?

what type of processor and speed? the pc if its upgraded may not be fastest enough to handle the DSL. Need to find the minimum specification from your DSL provider as well.

Outside of that my first guess is either your ethernet connection if you are using an on board nic or a conflict on the bus if you are using usb to connect to the dsl.

Thanks so much for your reply. After using computer in question the other day I became suspicious and ran a virus scan. Wow! It's loaded with Adware, which Norton cannot get rid of. Deleting them (acording to Norton) is pretty involved and requires going into the registry, which I am hesitant to do ;O) This is all new to me. Have no idea how all this got into the computer to begin with. Stopped by the Computer Doctor today, to get some insight into this, but he wasn't in. Arrrrrugh!

If it's so involved that it's a mess to get rid of, I'd try just reformatting the computer, to it's original settings.

Karen, appreciate your response. There was never any question of the computer not being up to snuff...of course you guys didn't know that so it's good you asked :O) Since webpages were causing the computer to feeeze, my concern was how to get rid of all that junk. I didn't know spyware programs are avaliable on disc. Actually yesterday I was able to install an adware program from the web....without computer freezing.... Yay! Also I wanted to know where all that junk comes from. It's a teenagers computer and I had pretty well figured out she was visiting sites that were the culprits. Computer guy told me the biggest offenders for "malware" are games, music and porno sites. Big sigh of relief after crossing that hurdle. Thanks again, Martha

Yeah, alot of really "good kids" still get a ton of adwre and stuff, because thos eprograms like to target sites where naive kids will accidentally download them.
