When playing a media file I get the error message saying there is an error in downloading codec? Does anyone know what this means please... I have both Quick-time and Windows Media player but I still get the above error message on about 60% of my video downloads. HELP!!!!

codec is short for compression/decompression. It is what a software program must do to communicate to device specific items on your PC like a sound card, video card etc. In your particular case one of these devices can not read the codec language. It may be possible to get it from the manufacturers site, or not at all.

To further help I would need to know the specific codec error.

I've got a bunch of videos that I watch on my computer and am very familiar with codec errors. What I've used is the Ace Mega Codec pack. I also use Winamp for some files that won't play on Windows Media. To download the Ace Mega Codec pack, you can go to: http://www.softpedia.com/public/cat/11/2/7/11-2-7-10.shtml

Sorry Ed, there is no specific codec error. I am talking about the Kazaa site (I know badddd) When you click to play the video a tiny message runs across the bottom of the window. It say Requesting codec, requesting codec and then error downloading codec and then that is it. No more explanation. Thanks for trying though.

Thanks Lynne, I am in the process of downloading the Ace mega Codecs. After it is in my computer do I need to do anything to link it to my music program or will it do it on its own? Gosh, that makes me sound so computer stupid doesn't it? I guess that is why I am here.

Laurie,

Just unzip, if it's zipped and run it. It should do the rest. Since you mentioned that you are on Kazaa, I hope you are using Kazaa Lite K++ because it has a built in firewall so you will be less likely to get busted. I know, I'm bad too! ;) Make sure that the files you are sharing are not too many, just in case!
