TOO much to back up for Service Pack 2

DH said for me to post here and flat out ASK - are people really losing all their data somehow due to this update if they haven't backed up everything? I mean, is that really happening, is Microsoft reporting people saying this? I'm sure I NEED to download these updates, but we don't have a CD writer here at home and DH says only about 2 of the photos we have on the computer will fit per disc, so we're looking at a zillion discs. Pretty much everything that's on this computer is something we don't want to lose, it's a substantial amount of stuff. But Microsoft is prompting me endlessly to do the updates, anyhow. I guess we need to back up everything, anyway, but this seems like a huge task just to download upgrades. Why the devil have they made THIS particular update like this, it's frustrating and I can't recall it ever being like this in the past.

This won't let me edit my own post, so I need a separate one. I went to Microsoft's site about doing this download and it tells you to click, in order: start, all programs, accessories, systems tools - then it says click "backup" and that the "restore wizard" should open by default. Well, there's no "backup" there to click, so I'm stumped from the get-go.

I'm on XP, and here's how I get to it, in order:

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore

That brings up the Restore Wizard, but I haven't used it yet; I've only had this computer for a couple of months, and haven't needed it yet.

As for losing data when upgrading to SP2, most programs like that (especially Microsoft) will tell you to back up data before making changes, to be on the safe side.

I haven't lost anything. Installed at home and at work on our network. Not one problem at all. Why would anyone lose their data due to installing SP2?

You *really* need to back up your data though. Buy a cheap cd burner. Do you and hubby realize your hard drive could just *die* and everything will be lost? Been there, done that. Really, this "huge task" is nothing compared to losing everything you've stored on your computer. Hard drives don't last forever. You can purchase a decent cd burner for under $50 now. Well worth the money.
