Slow incoming/outgoing e-mail

Still haven't installed the new service pack for XP, but once I get a CD burner, I will. In the meantime, when I posted awhile back about how everything seems to be slow, I think what I was really noticing was e-mail. I can find nothing wrong with my computer so is it likely I just need to contact our server? In the past when I click on "send/receive" in OE, whatever's coming in comes in with a snap of my fingers. For a week or so now it takes up to 45 seconds to complete that step, including when there's nothing coming in at all. If this doesn't make sense, I can try to elaborate, but that's about the gist of it. ???

A couple of years ago when I was using Trend's PC-Cillin, mine would do that same thing. I called my ISP to find out why my mail was SOOO slow. They told me that the part of the antivirus program that scans the e-mail was hanging up. I had to uninstall and reinstall the PC-Cillin and then all was fine again. So it could be your ISP or it could be what's scanning your e-mail.

And sometimes it could be that your ISP server is having maintenance done or it's having problems. I always check on my ISP support page for network status as well.

I think you're right, it's probably McAfee that's causing this slowdown. Lately this computer flashes that box at me all the time, McAfee is checking out everything I open up but now it NOTIFIES me every time - it just flashes for a second, obviously doesn't find anything risky, so the box disappears before I even have a chance to read what it's doing. I NEVER used to see that box appear at all. It's feeling like SOMEHOW a setting in McAfee got changed, or maybe an upgrade download changed something (I don't recall changing any settings there at all). But it's behaving exactly like our old dial-up server did when it takes about 45 seconds when it's checking for incoming e-mail. We're on cable, it usually opens up e-mail in a second or two, like it's supposed to!

All of the above, when I thought about my isp scanning for junk, zone alarm, and Norton all scanning the same mail no wonder it is slower than it used to be. But it sure is nice when I got to my isp and delete all that stuff that used to be downloaded to me. Unless it is taking a , go to the bathroom, wash hands,

My ISP *also* scans for viruses and other nasties, besides scanning for known spammers. I think many ISPs are doing that nowadays, so that before you can download your email, it's already being scanned on the ISP's servers. I had a PC with Win98 on it and had to break down and buy a new version of McAfee because I couldn't get any more updates. That new version messed up my Windows settings, made it so older programs wouldn't work, etc. It was a nightmare. I uninstalled and switched to Norton Symantec, and their new version didn't cause the damage that McAfee did. YIKES!
