Pop up window....total frustration

Hi. I am so frustrated with pop up windows. I have downloaded two blocking programs to combat this problem and needless to say I still have them. It is so bad that sometimes I will walk away from the computer briefly and come back to have 30 pop up ads opened up. They just pop up so fast. What can I do about this? It's so annoying....also I have noticed that my default homepage is constantly changing to certain internet sites. How do I stop this from happening. It is most disrupting when my kids are on the internet doing homework and are constantly interrupted with the pop up windows and some of them advertise girly sites.....

hey terryall,
That's correct, you have spyware in your computer. Once you remove it, you wont need pop-up blockers. Go online and download 2 spyware removal programs, ad-aware and spybot. You can find ad-aware at www.lavasoft.de. You can download thier free version. You can get Spybot by going to www.download.com and do a search for Spybot.. you should see a program called "Spybot: Search and Destroy". Download them both, open them, download their updates, and then scan for spyware. After doing all of this you should see a big difference. Hope that helped.

Just another bit of info. The advice you already got in this thread is very good. I have a popup blocker setting in my Netscape browser, which I have on all the time. However, on some sites, including *this* one, that is not always enough not to get junk when you click on a link. Some popups are not "traditional" popups and so aren't blocked by the usual popup blocker programs or options. What I have done in the past was turn off Javascript in my browser preferences. That usually takes care of the popup junk ads that don't get blocked with the popup setting. The other way to help is control your cookies settings in your browser. I allow my cookies to only work for the immediate session I have my browser up & running. When I shut it down, it erases all cookies and I start again when I activate my browser once again. There are more involved settings you can make, also, regarding cookies and allowing only certain sites and not others. That's all in your browser preferences.
The latest strategy some sites are now employing is using Javascript for their popup ads so your blockers don't work on them. Grrrr!
About the spyware and adware programs, definitely use them! Also, do you have a firewall in place as well? When certain websites are visited, they can write script to your hard drive that takes you back to their site and/or sends them info about what you do/where you go when online. You can't be too careful these days...
Good luck!
