My MAC- one of the small models which came out five years ago in colors- just shows a blue box with a question mark in it. I can;t get it to start up. I am at a total loss because all my work at home files are on the desktip. Can someone shed some light>

Hi. I'm a new Mac user -- a refugee from the world of PCs after 15+ years. :P I've discovered 2 great resources for Mac that I'll pass on to you. Go to the Apple web site (www.apple.com), if you haven't been there yet, and click on the Support tab at the top, and then you'll find some sections to help and a search engine to look for the info you want. There's also a discussion/user forum on the Support page, if you click on the Discussion tab at the top. I got some questions answered there. Also, my local Apple store, where I recently bought my eMac, has what they call a Genius Bar. I went in and talked to them a few times when I needed some help. You have to wait your turn, but you have to sign up for the next available time slot. You can do this at any computer in the store by clicking on the Genius Bar icon, or go to your local store's web site (you can find this out on the Apple web site) and click on Genius Bar and sign up. Then you'll know ahead your time slot. You might check if you have an Apple store near you and check with them, also, as to getting help. Good luck! Gypsy

Blessings,

Gypsy

DS tried that-nothing. He took it to the Apple Store and someone there said he could fix it, but is not sure the data won't be lost. To save the data separately would be too costly. I opted to just have them try to fix it. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Happy to hear you are getting help with your Mac! :) I did go to the support page on the Apple web site and found a reference to your G3 and that "blue box," but since you've taken it in to be fixed, I won't post it. Hope all goes well and your data is saved!

For what it's worth in the future, you might want to subscribe to .Mac, a service that gives you secure storage space for your data on the Mac servers, so that if your system crashes, your data is backed up. It comes with an anti-virus program as well as a backup program and other goodies. It's $99/year, however. Also, if you have a zip drive or CD burner drive, backing up to them is a good habit, also. My daughter had a G3 as you do, and at that time, she bought a zip drive for under $100 and backed up all her files to it.

Again, I hope all works out well for you and you have your data and your computer back in working order! :)
