And how are they getting around all the security and stuff I have on this computer? They're banner types, if you scroll down, they scroll right with you and eventually fade away. I just never understand how they're there at all.

I have even noticed that some of those have a very faint and faded into the background X button but you don't see it till it just about ready to quit anyway. I don't think we can stop the survey ones anyway I have my pop up stopper and my OPT out cookie and those still pop up........

Maybe it is paying the bills.......lol......Otherwise I don't know why there would be so many.......Janet

Hmmmmm.... I don't get these at all. The only place I go on iV are several message boards I'm active on, though. I have Netscape's browser and the popup blocker is on. Maybe my Mac firewall blocks them somehow? I also never got these on my old PC, but I turned off Javascript in my browser on that computer whenever I came to the iV web site. I don't get any of those things. Strange that you get them with more programs in place to protect you, and I don't get any.... My cookie settings are set to only allow to originating web site and are only good for the current session. When I shut down the browser, all cookies are wiped.

I've noticed in the past many of the pop-ups are "topic specific", meaning if you open up a board on hair care, the pop-ups would be about some kind of beauty product, etc. - I haven't seen them everywhere just yet. I haven't made a note WHERE these new ones occur, I think it just continues to surprise me that there are people obviously employed to come up with ways to get around security. The question is, I guess, why does that continue to surprise me? Ha!

I've heard before about people seeing these topic specific ads popping up, on boards that I frequent, but I've never gotten one yet... As for the advertising, that's probably how iV pays the bills -- selling advertising. :P It's pretty much still a free site (for which I am extremely grateful!) at least for me, as I don't pay for the extra features, which I can cheerfully do without, LOL! :D I've always figured I pay enough with ISP fees, buying a computer system and maintaining it, paying my electricity bills, etc., I am not paying anything more! :P

I use Mozilla's Firefox and never had any popups. Ever.

I've been hearing good things about FireFox. I use Netscape, which is now based on Mozilla, also. Maybe that's why I don't have problems, either. I understand FireFox also has a Mac version, so may check it out. Does Firefox have an email program like Netscape, or is it just the browser?

Gypsy,

I agree with you full hearted on NOT paying no more. The ISP bills are plenty! I def. know what your all talking about with the IV pop ups. I thought I would go nutts with that pop up about some Ekanuba dog food ad! grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr..........It just follows you all the way down the post. Its just sooooooooooo sooooooooooo annoying. I just want to read the posts, and get going! Not sit and wait for the ads to glid across the screen. Thats why I use the pop up stopper. But, sometimes if its on, I cant get to a few clicks that I do want to see, ya know?

Oh well........just one more annoying thing we have to deal with. I just hate it though when I have to search for the "little x" to get rid of it while Im in the middle of reading posts or posting. GRRRRRRRRR.........then it KEEPS coming up even after you get rid of it or go to another board! The best part of them ads is I dont even have a dog and I thought that they would send pop ups to what your interested in........hummmmmmmmgo figure!?

Ok........thanks for letting me vent! I'm glad that Joanne posted on this subject, cuz I sure was going to mention! thanks!

I turn off Javascript as well as have popup blockers. Some of the popups are Javascript, so popup blockers don't work on them. I just turn on Javascript if I want to edit my Profile or something; otherwise I really don't need it here on iV. :D In fact, I hate busy, blinky OBNOXIOUS (LOL!) junk when I'm trying to read boards, so I even block signatures from showing for me, LOL! :P And without Javascript turned on, I don't see the banner ad across the top or the big ad down below, either.

Yes, Netscape is Mozilla based but Firefox has all the bells and whistles. I like it. It does have an e-mail program but I don't use it because I use Mailwasher to weed out the crap e-mails before downloading them. I don't know if Mailwasher is compatible with Firefox's mail program or not.

Thanks for the info on FireFox! :D I'll check it out further. I know it's available for Mac because others have mentioned it. We've used Netscape Messenger as our email for years, as well as their browser, and I just dread the thought of training DH on something new, LOL! :P
