I am trying to install DSL and even my computer guy could not get it started. The technical support people think it might be because our phone line is pulse instead of tone. Has anyone else had this experience. I am sitting here with a the DSL kit and still using dial-up. Bummer.

First of all, I want to thank all of you for your help and support.
I haven't had time to change my Halloween avatar either maybe later today....lol
I never did understand how the nationwide isp would work.
Here is how things have gone for me using my phone company.
I am in a town of under 500 people, and we are about 180 miles from Omaha if that gives you any idea how far out we are, but then we are about 100 miles from Sioux City Iowa. (I am in Nebraska) Most places had internet connection about 5 years before we did. I had dial up at first.
My husband is an EMT/Fireman(volunteer) so when the answering machine came out I put in another line because you couldn't use the answering machine with the fire phone. When they finally got pagers I said I was going to dump the other line because it was costing me about $23 a month and we never used that for anything but the fire phone.
I was paying $24.95 a month for dial up. It would cost me another $15 a month for DSL and since the switching station is about at the end of my block I was sure close enough. I called one morning for my DSL modem. That afternoon our local phone guy(the one that lives here in town) brought the modem and the papers on how to install it. I plugged it in went to my internet connecton put in the numbers and I was flying around all over the place by that afternoon.....
A month or so later I had no connection at all. So I called them and there was a message that a line had been cut at Rulo (down by the border of KS) and that your internet would be back up as soon as possible. It was a matter of a couple hours.
I thought I was having trouble with my connection and the next day the phone man was here with another modem......
Then one day we got a letter saying that they were no longer charging the $10 for the modem which made our connection just $5 more a month than dial up......Yes, I am sure that I could get a cheaper connection, but would I get as good of service?
Except for the time when the line was cut I have not had a problem with them, they do their thing in the wee hours of the morning and they always send us an email telling us that they will be upgrading or whatever between the hours of 2 and 4 am on such and such a day. I did not get up to check and see how long it took them to do it...LOL
I have heard stories from other people with their connections but here through our phone company it has been really good.
Good luck finding out if you can get the DSL to work for you. I know you will like the speed. I know that my DBIL said that a guy he knows has a ranch out in the middle of nowhere. (West of here) he went to town and bought a modem and cussed because it didn't work. When he finally got it through his head that the only way he was going to get faster speed was with a dish he said......"Then if the modem isn't going to work for everyone they shouldn't sell it to everyone..."...........lol.......Janet
Have a nice day !.
I have no idea how my nationwide ISP works, either! LOL! It's "magic" as far as I'm concernd. :P I just know it works for me. Had dialup with the same ISP since '96 and for 2 months now, have their DSL. I've had great service from them all these years, which is why I didn't go with the cheapest advertised ISP out there for DSL, but stuck with my own. I love the speed, too! :D They even give me 20 hrs/month free dialup, so if I'm traveling and use dialup on my laptop, I don't have to pay unless I go over the 20 hours. KEWL! I don't travel much, and 20/hrs. a month even when I *do,* would be plenty. I also have email d/l on my Sidekick for my main email addys as well as my T-Mobile account, so I'm fine whatever. :P
