Typing in AIM and also in Word is so weird and frustrating.   I am typing blanks and the words appear 10-20 seconds later.  It doesn't happen typing here.  The settings must be off somewhere - any idea what is going on - Thanks

Hmmmm... I have noticed it on AIM -- and I have DSL, so connection speed usually isn't an issue. I think it's the server on AOL that we use when using AIM; probably server is overly busy... As for Word, I never had that problem EXCEPT if I had too many windows open and not enough RAM. I've had more problems here on iV at times of the day when more people seem to be on, though.

You could check your settings just to be sure, as well as your RAM on your computer, how many windows open at the time it happens, etc. Hopefully others will have some more suggestions!

Good luck,

Thanks for replying - what you said makes sense because I do only have 64 Ram and have been considering adding more.

If you get into your computer settings, you'll find "keyboard". I think that's where you can speed things up or slow them down, depending on how fast you type. I also encountered this problem when we had a dial-up service, I don't know enough about computers to tell you why that was the case. But I know the problem since I'm an ex-secretary and still type at warp speed, ha! You'll have typed a whole sentence and it's still back on "duh"!

Good point! I wouldn't have thought of that --> I've never had a problem with the keyboard default settings on any of my computers over the years. I'm a touch typist as well. It all figures in, I guess -- keyboard speed, the speed of the processor, the RAM, internet connection, servers you're connecting to...

I just upgraded from a 6-year old PC with Win98, 128 mgs RAM where I was having these slowdown, jerky programs when I had too many windows open and trying to do too much. What finally messed up speed and systems resources for me was having to upgrade my anti-virus program (old one too obsolete to d/l updates with any more...) and the new program was such a HOG on RAM, that it and my firewall going left me with little RAM to go online or open any programs. Before that I could have Word open to type post drafts, for example, for this board and spellcheck them. After I got this new updated McAfee program on the old computer, I couldn't open Word and use it without everything going jerky slow...plus I had dialup then. Now, on my new Mac, I have several gigs speed processor, 768 mgs RAM, DSL and *nothing* except the web site or my ISP when doing maintenance, slows me down, LOL! :D Guess I could have upgraded my old PC, but it had to have so many things replaced in the 6 years (two hard drives, graphics board, CD-RW drive, monitor...) I didn't want to put more memory or more money (like upgrading Windows) into old hardware...

It all makes a huge difference...

I run XP ('98 was set up the same way). You open up "My Computer", then click on "display". Under that you should find "keyboard". As I recall, you'll have to monkey with it a little to get it to match the speed you're looking for, but it will work.
