Active Setup Product Update Problem

I recently uninstalled/re-installed the Webshots software. Now, everytime I boot up I get the following message box: Active Setup Product Update (that's the title of the box). The message within the box says "Setup is unable to update any components. Please check your internet connection and then try again". I've never had this message before after uninstalling/re-installing any programs. What does this message mean and how do I make it go away or fix whatever the problem is?

I tried to find something on Webshots site, one thing said that you should make sure that you have emptied your temporary internet files. Other than that I would need to sign in to dig more and I don't have an account there.

Also does your computer have all of it's updates? The only other thing I can find for Active Setup are old pages about Active Setup for IE 4 to IE 5.0....... That is old.

I would check further on the Webshots site and see if anyone else has had that happen. Then let us know what you find out if you would.....Thanks Janet

Yes, I knew to empty my temp files first. Yes, I'm good on my updates. I will go to Webshots to "investigate" and I will get back to you as soon as I find out something.

I went to Webshots site and am unable to submit my problem as I do not have a Premier Membership (I only have the free "generic" Webshots).

Except for making a "cheat dinner" for hubby since I last e-mailed you I've been every place I can think of to fix/get rid of the boot up unwanted Active Setup Product Update box. Was able to locate it in C:\ProgramFiles|InternetExplorer|ACT.SETUP.EXE I clicked on it and got told it was already running and therefore I could not execute it. Is this maybe an Internet Explorer problem?? I'm running Version 6.0.2800.1106 with Serv. Pack 1 and many updates. Should I re-install Internet Explorer? If so, do I un-install it first? I guess I need instructions on how to do that too, if you agree with me!!!

Let me look around and see if I can find something out about this. If it is a problem you would have without Webshots or not.

I have looked at Webshots before and I thought about downloading it but it is just something else taking up my cpu power and is always going on the internet by itself and that bugs me.

Be right back.........

Are you running Windows XP? I am having the darnedest time trying to find anything on Active Setup after 1999-2000.

I can't find anything either. It could be that something is corupted. Can you right click on it and turn it off?

We have a Tech guy stop by from time to time that may be able to answer you. But here is Microsofts link to reinstalling IE. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

After checking on what people had to say about Webshots either it installed smoothly or they were having worse problems that you are. One guy said he downloaded the free version and had a Shell.dll problem. So he was going to email or call Webshots and there is no way to get ahold of them at all unless you have paid for their program. And he said he thought it was silly to pay to get help for something that was broken before you buy it.......

This is the first time I have come up with nothing like this. I am sorry. Anyone else have any ideas?

My computer has started runnng slow and I have not installed SP2 after searching for the best way to handle this because I know it has to be installed. Then best way that most of the geeks have said is to get the disk and reinstall Windows and install the SP2 on a clean installation......I hate to do that but it might be a better way than to mess around with things not working at all............

So we both need help.........Janet

I run Windows 98. I don't have a simple Windows 98 re-install disk so I'd have to do a complete re-format using my HP Recovery disks: something I'm trying to avoid as it's VERY time-consuming and I really hate to do it for fear I'll have even worse problems. Yes, I've re-formatted twice, over three years ago. Your are correct.......there's NOTHING new on this subject. It all deals with old I.E. versions. When I right click on it (from the task bar), it says "move". The box remains on the desktop and I can click on the x in the box to make it disappear. I can also click on the "O.K." in the box and it will disappear. Does this tell you something new?

I did read somewhere that in order to update some things according to Microsoft you need to get XP.

I think we've run into a dead end. I appreciate your help. One more question.......do I need to uninstall I.E. 6.0/SP 1 before I re-install it? (Again, Windows 98). I think I have to (from Add/Remove?). I'm going to try that. If it fails to solve my problem I'm thinking of a new computer. This one's not as old as your Merc, but maybe it's time. I've managed to keep it pretty much problem free for three years now!

I fixed it!!!!!!!!! Since the error message appeared during Bootup, I went back, yet again, to my Startup files and looked even closer at the checked boxes. There was one........Launcher.exeC:\PROG~1|ACTSETUP.EXE that was checked. I unchecked it and lo' & behold........the message no longer appears during Startup! In the meantime I'm staying clear of Webshots. If anyone else has this problem I hope my solution works for them. Have a nice Christmas.
