I like a clean desktop, too! :D I have my hard drive and my iDisk (access & storage link I get through Mac, for storage of data on their servers). I have my most used icons on the "Dock" which is like the Task Bar on PCs, except that I don't have to have the programs open and sucking RAM if I'm not actually using them. I design a "pretty" desktop and I don't want a bunch of icons cluttering it up, LOL! :D

I can choose different graphics if I want to, for whatever icons I allow on my desktop for folders and such, but it's so fast to retrieve what I want via the Dock, I'd rather enjoy my pristine desktop with chosen picture on it! Hee! Hee! :)

Did you know that most people that I know who have their first computers (these are older people) , thought if the icon wasn't there there was no way to open the program. One lady really liked that we got her granddaughter's picture for the wallpaper without having an icon in her eye.......lol.......Me too...... I am not a wallpaper junkie but I like to change with the seasons.

Sounds like I am going to get all my kids home at the same time for the first time since 1996, all the grands will be here too except for 2 of them. I will have pictures...................lol.......Janet

Have a wonderful celebration! :D

About limited knowledge, I know a lot of people like that and they are dependent on techs who often know very little or have a poor command of English and so misconstrue what the problem is or miscommunicate back. I had a friend who had a very sporadic Internet connection for nearly 3 months! Just wouldn't dial up sometimes and would other times. :( She called her ISP tech support and they had her do all sorts of weird stuff she didn't understand to her modem settings and what have you, including uninstalling and reininstalling her dial up program, all to no avail. Finally her tech-savvy nephew came by and they discovered that when she forgot to check her phone for that little beep-beep to tell her she had messages on the phone company answering service, that beep-beep blocked her ability to dial up! Not one tech thought to ask her that, especially after a lengthy "history" of tech calls for the problem. Fortunately, the nephew was able to undo the damage that the techs had done to her modem settings and what have you, as well, so she was finally good to go. Until she told me what the solution was, I didn't think of it, either, even though we had run into the problem several years ago, when we were still on dial up and had gotten the answering service. What I finally did was have the telephone company *not* give us the beep-beep. We trained ourselves to just check by speed dialing the answering service periodically through the day (when we got off a lengthy online session or when no one had been home for awhile) instead of having the aggravation of not being able to dial up until we dealt with hearing our messages first. Didn't like the beep-beep having control over when I wanted to get online, LOL! :P You learn as you go...

This is funny now sort of.........

In Feb. we had to get a new reciever for our satellite dish. The dish is plugged into the phone line so I can order movies with the remote. I have not done that for years but we plug it in anyway. Well, One day while I was talking to someone on the phone I get this sound that was between a modem dialing and a fax like sound. I hung up and called the lady back and everything was fine. I thought it was her phone. Then sometime later it happened again. Well, if you are on a call to a friend you just say I'll call you back. But someone like the hospital giving you instructions for you tests or something important it was getting on my nerves.

I called the phone company. She sharply told me (probably because she had this same call many times) that it was because the satellite was trying to connect or the was getting information and just unplug the phone like from the reciever. Ok, I did that but, for Pete's sake that has been connected to the phone jack since 1988 why now? Well, she didn't know but that was the problem. And about that time I got that again. She said in order for that NOT
