The last PC I had was running Win98, so I don't know if this will help if you have the newer XP, etc. You should be able to access that information through your Start button, then Accessories, then System Information (I think that's what it's called, but may have changed with the OS upgrades). If you're on a Mac, just click the Apple button in the top menu bar and then on "About this Mac" and the window it opens will tell you exactly how much RAM you have.
Good luck! I understand about not wanting to be cheated...

Wren, go to Start, right click on My Computer and go to Properties..... on that top thing that pops up it will say, System-------Tells you what version of Windows you have and if you have service packs installed.
Registered to------That will probably be your name
Computer ----------There you will find out about your processor and how much ram you have. If you have 128 and you bought another 128 it should say that you have 256 installed.

Have a nice day !.
Thanks
I know I have been running sluggish lately too. I wanted to get sp2 installed and so I got the disk to install it when I had the tech reinstall Windows.....he told me that he wouldn't put it on yet.....and that my 256 MB of memory should still be ok for me. Which I thought should be too but then who knows.....
Do things open slowly or are you having things freeze?
He is going to come and look to see if there is something that I can't find that is making mine run slowly. DH would like me to get a laptop so I could have it when we go camping but I said I want this one running better first......Janet
It is not freezing.
Wren, I too have (since the board change over last year) a problem getting into iVillage and posting, yes it is very slow. I have reported it as well as others too, I have DSL it has been slow here since then. But other places I don't have problems either. Dialup will be slower too but is not all the problem.
I uninstalled MSN messenger and my Microsoft mouse the other day and things have seemed to be a little bit better. I never used the scroll or the back and forward on my mouse so why have it contacting the internet for updates?
I find I have not been using my IMs as much and I do have Trillian so it isn't like I can't talk to my MSN friends. But there are a lot of things that can slow you down. I feel like the "bars" can slow you down too because when you go on the internet they are constantly going out at the same time too. No matter if it is Yahoo, Google, or anyother one.
Neither have I installed SP2, I now have the disk but when I asked the tech the other day about a clean install he said to hold off with SP2 a while longer. So in the mean time I can't get any other updates either. Still pondering what to do. But I am running a little faster now. Janet
Sorry for my Cap
Janet,
The Macromedia Flash player is what lets you see those lovely banners that are kind of like mini movies on some web pages. Also you need it if you want to play some games. But it don't have to run till you want it to.
Mine has never popped up on it's own so here are a couple things you can do. It may be starting when you start your computer. Go to Start, click on Run, type in there.... MSCONFIG then hit ok. Then click on the Start tab. Look and see if the flash player is in there. You can uncheck it and restart the computer and it won't start when you boot up. Same goes for anything else like Yahoo or MSN messenger they don't need to start up you can start them when you want them....Don't uncheck something you are not sure of.
It it should pop up again try right clicking on it and see if there is somewhere in there that says to run at startup. And say no. And if that don't work right click and see if there is a close and click that. It will start up again but at least not for a while........
See if that works.... I know on my old computer I had 4 players, Flash, Shockwave, Windows Media and Real. Now I have the Flash and Shockwave and use WMP and do not have Real. If something says it only plays on Real I didn't want to see it that bad.....lol....
Janet
Have a nice day !.
