Will the programs themselves still be available to just click on them in the start menu?  What about with My Computer and IE?  How do I keep programs from starting automatically when I restart my PC?  TIA

Yes a shortcut is just that the program will still be there. If you would like to have something like IE or OE out where you can get it you can drag the icons down by your start menu. But all the rest of your programs will be in the Programs list. I only have the trash bin on my monitor....And a full screen Christmas picture.

What kind of things don't you want to start? Messengers? They should have a check box probably in the Preferences of that program that will ask you if you want it to start when you start your computer. And there is no need unless you are an IM junkie and have to have it fast.........lol.......just kidding......But you can go to Start, Run, and type in MSCONFIG and take the check mark from the front of the IM or whatever.
