Last weekend DH and I decided to upgrade our Windows Firewall server to 2004. This is not a trivial undertaking. This is a special computer dedicated to handling the security for the entire network. Since we have customers that depend on us for web hosting and email services, we have to minimize the downtime by doing careful preparation before the conversion.
Friday night things went pretty well. I had suggested that rather than upgrading the current system, we should buy a new hard drive and swap the clean, new one for the current, old one. That way we could easy revert back to the old system if anything went wrong.
We were doing really well until Saturday afternoon when some of my testing started to having problems. We tried for several hours to identify the problem, but finally decided we should put the old hard drive back in and get the systems up so our customers could have access again.
Well, DH "forgot" to unplug the computer before swapping the hard drives and FRIED the whole thing. Yup. Always unplug the PC before removing the case.
About 12 hours (and much cursing) later, we had taken MY PC and pulled out the hard drives. We put the new hard drive in and tried to restore the backup from the old system. That failed because the hardware configuration was different on the new machine. So we ended up starting all over from scratch, formatting the hard drive and installed the operating system and software piece by piece. ***Isn't is Amazing that we are still married this week???
So now I have no PC, and my hard drives - with all my files and data - are sitting on the counter top. This is not very productive. Yesterday I ordered a "bare-bones" system with no hard drives or CD drives (since I already have plenty available), no monitor or printer, no keyboard or mouse. It's just a Box, a Fan and a Motherboard with CPU. Hopefully it will be here before the new year. I'm not sure how long we will stay married if I don't have access to my files. ;-)

I feel for you, Donna. My DH is an electrician and still I have to tell him to unplug things before he opens them.
I didn't know that Windows Firewall needed to be updated. I have automatic updates set; will this automatically update the firewall?

Oh, Donna, that sounds like such a mess. My computer is 3 years old and starting to run a little sluggish and I have been thinking about a reinstall. But it is one of those things like going to the dentist when there is just a little pain.....lol.......I know what a pain it is to have to get things back the way you want them.
But the good news is if the 2 of you made through this I would say you have at least
Have a nice day !.
