Ethernet port?

I'm getting ready to have cable internet installed on my computer. The cable company told me that I needed an ethernet port. I think I have one but want to clarify before they show up at my house. Isn't the ethernet port the port on the back of the CPU that looks like a phone jack but it's larger than a normal phone jack or is that something else?

That should be it and if you still have the packing slip from when you bought your computer it will tell you for sure. If you want to be double sure. You are going to have so much fun with your high speed connection.

Come back and tell us what you think...........Janet

Thanks for your quick response.

I was just talking to my coworker, who is going to school to become an IT tech.....and he was saying that the ethernet port was only on laptops,as far as he knew but that the port I have on my desktop should be equivalent. Do you know anything about that?...The guys already came to hook my internet up once but couldn't because they needed to drill in another line for it so I want to make sure I have everything I need so I actually get my internet this time!! Thanks again!!

I am not an IT person just a grandmother. But I have what they call a 10/100 ethernet card in my desktop. If the port is there there is a card in there.

Cable modems from what I can figure are either ethernet or usb.

And shame on the cable guy if he was there once for not looking at your computer to tell you everything was ok. And if he did look then he knows everything is ok. Darn them for not saying something to you. In the excitement people don't think to ask those kind of questions.

For me dial up was much harder to set up than when I got DSL. I called the phone company (we are a little rural town) and later that afternoon my phone guy brought the modem. I was to call the phone company and when I did while I was sitting in front of my computer they walked me through setting it up.

Our cable tv here is really, really bad and even if they offered cable internet I bet you couldn't find one person that would bite on that one......lol......That is the price of small places.

I bet that everything is ok on your end and I know you will like it......Don't forget to come back here when you get hooked up. I know you will be surfing fast all over the place.......lol........MERRY CHRISTMAS Janet

Yes, the ethernet jack looks just like a phone jack - only wider.

Thanks everyone!!

I know I'll love the new internet once it's up and running but since they couldn't install it the first time they came out...I have to wait until next Tuesday.....but I'll be sure and come back and let you know how it goes!!
