http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,119458,tk,dn012605X,00.asp

from the article:

"Microsoft in mid-2005 will put a piracy lock on two of its download Web sites, requiring all Windows XP and Windows 2000 users to validate their copy of Windows as genuine before downloading software, the company says.

The lock will be placed on the Microsoft's Download Center and Windows Update Web sites, which offer applications such as Windows Media Player and the new Windows AntiSpyware product as well as security updates for Microsoft products.

Validation is not required for Windows Automatic Updates, says David Lazar, a director in Microsoft's Windows Client group. Automatic Updates is a feature in Windows that is used to download and install security updates to Microsoft software.

The move to lock out pirated copies of Windows from the download sites is part of Microsoft's effort to fight software piracy. The Redmond, Washington, software maker has been testing the lock on the Download Center Web site since September. So far over 5 million users have voluntarily taken part in the test, according to Microsoft."

Thought those of you with Windows would find this worth reading... :)

WOW! :=O Sounds like the evolution from giving you lots of documentation, paperwork, books, even CDs, the manufacturer's have really gone to giving you hardly anything at all but a sticker glued somewhere on the machine itself. Guess because there's a huge market to buy all the "how to" books and this forces you to do that, instead of having it given to you as part of the price of the computer system. At least in the new PC market, from what you describe. The first couple of computers we bought (in first half of the 90s) had a book/actual manual for EVERY program, a CD for EVERY program, with licensing info glued to the front of the book for all the MS stuff. The only sticker stuck to the computer was it's serial number and model number. Then we got the HP in '98 and there were NO books/booklets on ANY of the bundled programs we bought (like how to use Quicken or how to use any of it). Just licensing documentation for Windows and the MS Small Business Suite. I insisted on a separate CD for the MS suite and got it, but everything else, including Quicken, was on the HP installation disc, which contained Win98, Quicken, the fax program, and so forth. Now they don't even do that, from the sounds of it. GEESH!

I think what happened with having to activate the product is because of the pirating that was going on. Windows 98 didn't have an activation key. But when you think of it, if you had Windows 98 and a bunch of friends of yours had computers you could let them use your copy to install on their machines. But even thought Microsoft is a rich company they don't like loss anymore than the small company. So comes the activation Key.

Since it is important that you have that I would suggest that you write it down and keep it where you keep other important things. My key is a sticker on the CD sleeve and there is one on the back or side of my Dell computer. I have it written down several places so just in case I have a senior moment......lol.

But you are right. The reason that computers are so cheap is because you are not getting a full
